Lilly Library Manuscript Collections


The Strand mss., 1953-1982, consist of the correspondence and manuscripts of Mark Strand, 1934- , poet. Included with the manuscripts are both published and unpublished poems and prose pieces, galleys of published works, some photographs, and clippings of Strand's poems from various periodicals and reviews.

The correspondents in the collection include: Jonathan Aaron, Rafael Alberti, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, William Bailey, Marvin Bell, Elizabeth Bishop, Norman Thomas Di Giovanni, Sanford Friedman, Jorge Guillen, Donald Hall, Michael Hamburger, Daniel Gerard Hoffman, Richard Howard, Richard Hugo, Laura Jensen, Erica Jong, Donald Justice, Alfred M. Lee, Philip Levine, Laurence James Lieberman, William Matthews, James Merrill, William Stanley Merwin, Nolan Miller, Octavio Paz, David Pryce-Jones, Lawrence Raab, Anne Sexton, Charles Simic, Greg Simon, May Swenson, David Wagoner, Robert Penn Warren, Richard Wilbur, Charles Wright, and David Pollock Young.

Writings present include Darker (Atheneum, 1970), Reasons for moving (Atheneum, 1968), Sleeping with one eye open (Stone Wall Press, 1964), and The story of our lives (Atheneum, 1973).
