STRAWN MSS.

The Strawn mss., ca. 1959-1998, consist of correspondence, notes and translations made primarily from French into English by Professor Richard R. Strawn, 1923- , of Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Most of the opera translations were made by Professor Strawn for or under commission of the Indiana University School of Music Opera Theatre. Among the operas are Debussy's Pelléas and Mélisande (1977), Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice (1992), Gounod's Faust, Manon by Massanet (1980), Mussorgsky's Boris Gudunov (1978), and Rimsky-Korsakov's Night Before Christmas (1979). The latter opera was performed by the Indiana University Opera Theatre and taped for showing on PBS in 1979. Other composers translated by Strawn include Malipiero, Mozart, Orrego-Salas, Rameau, and Ravel.

The collection is arranged in two series: I. Opera translations; II. Translations of or relating to French poet Francis Ponge, 1899-1988. An inventory of the collection is available.
