Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

SUTTON MSS.

The Sutton mss., 1894-1935, consist of letters from Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924, novelist, to various people, and of correspondence between other people about Conrad. Correspondents in addition to Conrad are Sir Hugh Charles Clifford, Sir Sidney Colvin, Jessie (George) Conrad, Richard Curle, Edward Garnett, Perceval Gibbon, Georges Jean-Aubry, Edward Verrall Lucas, Henry Louis Mencken, and Herbert George Wells. Also present is a photograph of Joseph Conrad, ca. 1904; a signed and witnessed copy of the original contract between Eveleigh Nash and Conrad for the publishing rights to Some Reminiscences, July 27, 1911; and two letters that have pen and ink sketches by Conrad appended to them.

Copies of Joseph Conrad as I knew Him (London: William Heinemann, 1926) and Joseph Conrad and his circle (London: Jarrolds, 1935), both by Jessie Conrad, and Richard Curle's The Last years of Joseph Conrad (London: Sampson Low, Marston, & Co., 1928), each with a letter bound in, complete the collection.

These materials were formerly part of the Raymond M. Sutton, Jr. collection of Conrad. See The Raymond M. Sutton, Jr. collection, part two (Lilly PR6006 .O4, Box 1, no. 36) for a description of the entire collection.
