The Whitcomb mss., 1933-1985, consist of the papers of Edgar Doud Whitcomb, 1917- , lawyer and former governor of Indiana.
The collection is organized into the following series: I. Biographical; II. Correspondence; III. Writings; IV. Subjects; V. Photographs; VI. Miscellaneous; VII. Appointment books; VIII. Standing rules and orders. An inventory of the collection is available.
The early papers document his aviation and military career. Correspondence with his parents, 1933-1942, includes his letter dated Feb. 23, 1942 from Clark Field in the Philippines just before his capture, internment, and escape from the Japanese. The majority of the remaining collection concerns Whitcomb's book about this experience, Escape From Corregidor (H. Regnery: Chicago, 1958), including correspondence with the publisher as well as the original manuscript, book production and promotion materials, galley proofs, and reviews. Completing this section is a unproduced television script, Don't Look Back , based on the book. The collection also contains materials concerning his various election campaigns. Post-gubernatorial papers reflect his association with the ADBC (American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor), Accelerated Christian Education, and the Indiana Bible College.
