This list gives the collection name, date range and number of items in a collection followed by a very brief description of the contents of the collection. All of these collections are related to art.

ACKROYD MSS.

The Ackroyd mss. are letters written to artist Graham Ackroyd by author Philip Callow. The letters comment on painting and fellow writers and artists.

ALLEN MSS.

DATE RANGE: 9th century-1972

The Allen mss. consist of manuscript pieces collected by William Edward David Allen, foreign service officer, businessman and author. Of interest are fourteen watercolor caricature portraits; colored drawings on rice paper of Chinese punishments and three watercolors of military uniforms.

AMERICAN LITERATURE MSS.

The American literature mss. consist of individual items acquired from various sources. Of particular interest: 1887 series of illustrated letters by Eugene Field; a 1946 pencil sketch of Theodore Dreiser; colored pencil drawings by Maud and Miska Petersham and a pen and ink drawing by James Whitcomb Riley.

ASHTON MSS.

The Ashton mss. are the papers of textile designer William Adolphus Ashton. Included are sketches and patterns of designs for oil cloth and window shades; a sample of oil cloth and two painted window shades; medical drawings; buildings plans and a drawing of Masonic symbols.

The Berry mss. are the papers of diplomat Burton Yost Berry. Included are letters and articles which deal with the patterns, stitching, decorations, and embroidery work of old Turkish towels; Turkish gardens; oriental rugs; gems; coins; Turkish door furnishings and old Turkish silver snuff boxes. Material pertaining to numismatics and Turkish fountains is also included.

The Browne mss. are the papers of Lewis Browne, author, radio commentator, lecturer, and world traveler. Included are pencil sketches and pen and ink drawings by Lewis and his wife Myna for Browne's writings.

BRYAN MSS.

The Bryan mss. are primarily the letters of physician George Washington Bryan written by him to his wife Alice Bryan during the Civil War. Of particular interest is an 1849 autograph album, entitled "Flowers in Frolic", decorated with several drawings and watercolors which belonged to Alice Bryan. Several mementoes were laid in the album including a piece of petitpoint and a cornucopia in watercolor.

CHAMPNEY SKETCHES

DATE RANGE: 1873-1874
ITEM COUNT: 239 items
The Champney sketches are drawings of the post Civil War American South by James Wells Champney, painter and illustrator. Champney accompanied Edward Smith King on a trip of more than 25,000 miles through the South in 1873-1874 to make drawings for a series of articles for which King was collecting material.

CLADEL MSS.

DATE RANGE: 1869-1967
ITEM COUNT: 1,589 items
The Cladel mss. are the literary papers and correspondence of French writer Judith Jeanne Cladel. She was an early admirer of Auguste Rodin and wrote about him and was a major figure in the drive to establish a national museum for Rodin's work. Included are writings on Rodin by Cladel and copies of letters and documents of Auguste Rodin. Also there are numerous photographs of Rodin and his studio.

COMIC ART MSS.

The Comic Art mss. consist of original illustrations for comic books, newspaper comic sections, pulp magazines and film animations. Contact the Manuscripts Department for further information.

CONRAD MSS

DATE RANGE: 1886-1935
The Conrad mss. are the papers of author Joseph Conrad. Of interest are two pen and ink sketches by Conrad; a printing of a caricature of Conrad from þviat and a crayon caricature of Joseph Conrad by Sir David Low.

CRANSTONE SKETCHES

DATE RANGE: 1859-1860

The Cranstone sketches are a series of 312 pen and ink and wash sketches by Lefevre J. Cranstone illustrating a visit to the United States in 1859-1860. Some of the sketches are in full color, others tinted.

The J.S. Curry mss. are watercolors by illustrator John Steuart Curry which he prepared for illustrating The Literary Works of Abraham Lincoln.

The Derrick mss. consist of four watercolors by Thomas Derrick. The watercolors were created for dustjackets of three novels by Compton Mackenzie.

DERWOOD MSS.

The Derwood mss. consist of the papers and drawings of poet and painter Gene Derwood. The drawings include two sketch books, three abstract colored paintings and pictures of sculptured works by Derwood.

DREISER MSS. II

The Engel mss. consist of letters to Harry Engel, artist and professor dealing primarily with the murals in the Indiana University Auditorium. There are seven letters from Thomas Hart Benton, painter of the murals, to Engel.

Of particular interest: 1849 pen and ink sketch by William Makepeace Thackeray; extra- illustrations in an 1868 edition of Edward Fitzgerald's The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam; 1897 engraving of Rudyard Kipling; Of Gardens, an Essay designed, written and illuminated in 1905 by Alberto Sangorski and a 1922 autographed photograph of James Joyce taken by Man Ray. EVANS, HENRY MSS.

The Fess mss. consist of nineteen black and white undated photographs of paintings by artist Theodore Clement Steele, and one of his studio in Brown County, Indiana. The photographs were made by Frank Michael Hohenberger.

The Finlay mss. consist of the correspondence and writings of concrete poet Ian Hamilton Finlay. Letters exchanged with woodcarvers, stone carvers, photographers, typographers, printers, and artists give the instructions for the creation of many of his works. Also included are drawings of a garden setting for a Finlay poem.

FORMAN MSS.

The Forman mss. are papers sent to editor Harry Buxton Forman. Letters written by painter Ford Madox Brown and art critic John Pollard Seddon are concerned with settling the accounts for the placement of the bronze bust of poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, which was sculpted by Brown, for a memorial fountain placed opposite Rossetti's home.

FOX MSS.

The Fox mss. consist of the papers of Fontaine Talbot Fox, newspaper cartoonist of the Toonerville Trolley, including correspondence, original drawings of the cartoons and scripts of books and series. Printed material includes the prints of the syndicated Toonerville Trolley comic strip. Illustrating the fifty-three characters connected with the Toonerville Trolley, the cartoons are mostly in pencil, pen and ink, and are dated 1939-1955.

FRENCH LITERATURE MSS.

The French Lit. mss. consist of individual items acquired from various sources. Of particular interest: 1917 L'Homme et Son Desir: poeme plastique by Paul Claudel with a collage by Audrey Parr; two drawings by Jean Cocteau from 1920 and 1929 and two drawings in blue pencil by Genevieve Asse.

GALLERY MSS.

The Gallery mss. consist of accounts, artists' files, exhibition announcements, etc. for The Gallery of Bloomington, Indiana. Note: This collection has not yet been processed.

GERSTEIN MSS.

DATE RANGE: ca. 1795-1824
ITEM COUNT: 22 items
Consist mostly of portraits of General Lafayette collected by Jacob and Sylvia Finn Gerstein. While the majority of the images of Lafayette are engravings, there is also a watercolor copied from an oil painting by Le Paon, a color lithograph, and a bronze bas-relief bust mounted on marble.

The Gilder mss. consist of correspondence and papers of poet, editor Richard Watson Gilder and his wife, the artist Helena de Kay Gilder, and their family. Many pencil and watercolor sketches and sketchbooks of Helena may be found in the Artwork series.

The Gramatky mss. are the manuscripts and artwork for children's books by illustrator and writer Hardie Gramatky who became well-known for his Little Toot books.

HOFFMAN MSS.

The Hoffman mss. consist of the records of the Hoffman Bros. Company, manufacturers of the Hoffman patent band saw mill and of black walnut lumber and chairstuff. Of interest are oversize drawings of machinery.

The Illingworth mss. are the papers of businessman Richard Stonhewer Illingworth. Of interest are Illingworth's diaries which include small sketches and positions of mines in Colombia. Illingworth, son of Richard Illingworth; and a pen and ink drawing and description of a plan for the use of a distilling furnace.
