This list gives the collection name, date range and number of items in a collection followed by a very brief description of the contents of the collection. All of these collections are related to education.
ARCHER MSS.- DATE RANGE: 1838-1940
- The Archer mss. are notes on lectures and papers written by Calvin Beza Kell Archer while a student at Princeton Seminary, (now Hanover College) and Indiana University, 1838- 1844.
- The Art mss. consist of individual items acquired from various sources. Of interest are pen and ink drawings of designs for schools and school houses by architect Henry Edward Kendall dated ca. 1847.

- The Barnhart mss. are the papers of John Donald Barnhart, professor of history at Indiana University. Letters from and to eminent American historians, professors and educators are present.

- The Barnstone mss. consist of the correspondence and writings of Willis Barnstone, poet, translator and professor of Comparative Literature at Indiana University.

- The Bartholomew mss. are papers of Jacob Bartholomew. Bartholomew was a student at Granville College in Granville, Ohio from 1838 to 1842; from 1843 to 1848 he was a member of the faculty there. Emily Ebersole (wife of Bartholomew), was a teacher at the Springfield Female Seminary in Springfield, Ohio. Letters from former fellow students who were teaching in Ohio schools; commencement programs of Granville College and Kenyon College and other material related to Granville College and Springfield Female Seminary are present.

- The Bicknell mss. are the papers of George Augustus Bicknell, from 1861 to 1870 a professor of law at Indiana University. Included is an address to young men on religious, moral and political duties and a lecture on the teachings of the Bible in regard to slavery.

- The Bidney mss. consist primarily of class lecture notes, students' minutes of class sessions, and the writings of Indiana University Professor of Anthropology and Philosophy David Bidney.

- The Boxer mss. consist of the correspondence and papers of historian Charles Ralph Boxer. Lecture notes, writings by other scholars, student papers, miscellaneous teaching materials, academic awards and research notes are present.

- Lectures and speeches, correspondence, writings and notes used for research, published and unpublished articles, manuscripts and audiovisual materials of Wabash College professor William Norwood Brigance, teacher, scholar and leader in the Speech Association of America. Included are educational materials compiled and written by Brigance, as well as a typescript of his acclaimed textbook, Speech: Its Techniques and Discipline in a Free Society.

- The Broad Ripple High School mss. are those letters from Indiana authors collected by Broad Ripple High School, Indianapolis, Indiana for its Indiana Nook. Some of the letters contain autobiographical reminiscences of Broad Ripple High School.

- The Brown County, Ind., History mss. consist of school attendance reports; plot of school district; school receipts; teachers' reports to trustees; specifications for building a school at Little Blue Creek; school census records for 1888 and 1889 and a register of tardiness at school, all for Johnson township, Brown County.

- The Buley mss. consist of correspondence, clippings, awards, and photographs relating to Roscoe Carlyle Buley, professor of history at Indiana University.

- The Crone mss. are letters and papers of Frank Linden Crone. Crone received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University. From 1901 to 1916 Crone was associated with the educational system of the Philippines, from 1913- 1916 he was Director of Education of the Philippine Islands. Letters relating to educational developments in the Philippines and eight albums of photographs and a scrapbook of clippings pertaining to education in the Philippines are included.

- The Daniels mss. are the papers of lawyer Edward Daniels. Included is correspondence dealing with the curriculum of Wabash College, the role of the private college and the admission of women to Wabash College, 1893-1920, of which Daniels was a trustee.

- The Davis mss. consist of letters and papers of Emily Davis, teacher and Quaker of Liberty, Indiana. They are letters to Miss Davis from relatives and former schoolmates at the Liberty Seminary, several of whom were teaching school at the time in various places in Indiana.

- The Eigenmann mss. are the papers of ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann and of his wife Rosa (Smith) Eigenmann, ichthyologist. Letters are from colleagues at Indiana University, other universities, and scientific institutions and organizations.

- The J.B. Elliott mss. are letters written by and to John Bennett Elliott, student at Indiana University, 1852-1853. The letters describe life at the University at the time.

- The Funk mss. consist of letters and papers of educator Joseph Potts Funk. Included are various school and teacher records of several counties in south central Indiana from the 1850s to the 1890s.

- The Gill mss. are letters and prospectuses from various English and French boarding schools describing their curriculum, teachers, and environment.

- The Gwatkin mss. are the letters of Martha and Sarah More, who with their three sisters conducted a school for girls in Bristol, England. There is some mention in the letters of 'keeping school.'

- The J. Hadley mss. consist of three teacher's licenses to teach in Hendricks County, Indiana, issued to Bertha Wiley (Mrs. Joshua Hadley) dated 1888-1891; two of Miss Wiley's notebooks while a student at the Danville Normal School; a penmanship notebook of Joshua Hadley and a written copy of the "Salem Lyceum", a school newspaper.

- The Indiana History mss. consist of individual items acquired from various sources. Of interest is a two volume diary dated 1855-1857 written by David Eckley Hunter, a teacher in Elletsville, Indiana. Also of interest are forty-two notes, papers and letters dated Dec. 6, 1921-May 21, 1922 to Doyne Trout Koonce in answer to a request from her for information relating to the normal school movement in Indiana for use in her master's thesis.

- The E. Johnson mss., consist of letters from Edna Johnson, assistant professor of English at Indiana University to her family. From September 1906 to January 1907 Johnson attended a girl's school in Paris and most of the letters discuss her time there.

- The J. Johnson mss. are the educational materials devised by Jane Johnson of England for the instruction of her children. Included are alphabet cards, word cards,and lesson cards on religious and secular topics.

- The Kinnell mss. consist of the correspondence, writings and other papers of poet and professor Galway Kinnell. The correspondence concerns Kinnell's teaching and poetry reading. Also included are class notes, papers, and lecture material.

- The Konopinkski mss. consist of the papers and writings of physicist Emil John Konopinski. The collection includes some correspondence, lecture and course notes and an original draft of his calculations regarding ignition of the atmosphere

- The Leavitt mss. consist of six letters from teacher and surveyor George C. Leavitt to his parents and one letter to his wife. Leavitt was a school teacher in Indiana and his letters discuss educational conditions.

- The Lincoln mss. includes manuscripts of Abraham LIncoln, members of his family, members of his cabinet, other persons closely connected with him, and writings about Lincoln. Of particular interest is a sheet dealing with simple interest from an arthimetic sum-book in the hand of Abraham Lincoln dated ca. 1826.

- The Lott mss. are papers of rancher Mortimer H. Lott. Included are statements giving the boundaries of school districts, numbers 6 and 7, Oct. 18, 1868; a report of books used and names and attendance of scholars in District number 7, Madison County, Montana, Jan. 11, 1873.

- The McClure mss. consist of business and family correspondence and papers of editor Samuel Sidney McClure. In 1914 McClure endorsed the pedagogical theories of Maria Montessori and there are number of letters concerning this educational method.

- The Monroe County Historical Society mss. consist of documents relating to Monroe County. Of interest is "Reminiscences as student and teacher in rural schools of Monroe County, Indiana, in the 1880s" written by Marion F. Robertson.

- The Monroe County Indiana History mss. consist of materials relating to the history of the county. Of interest is "Trends in American higher education", a supplement to the annual School of Education report for the year 1938-39.

- The Muller mss. are the papers of Hermann Joseph Muller, biologist and Nobel prize laureate. Included are class notes from his courses on radiation genetics, evolution, mutation and the gene and lecture notebooks from his high school and Columbia University classes.

- The Plath mss. II contain the correspondence, writings and memorabilia of Sylvia Plath and her family. Of particular interest: memorabilia of high school; Smith College; Cambridge, Newnham College and material from Plath's teaching year at Smith. Plath mss. III includes college art projects.

- The B.M.K. Ralston mss. are the papers of Boyd Mercer Kerr Ralston, realtor of Indianapolis, Indiana, and brother of Governor Samuel Moffett Ralston. Of particular interest are B.M.K. Ralston's 1874-1878 school notebooks pertaining to arithmetic, geography, grammar, history, parsing and physiology.

- The Spears mss. consist of the files of educator Harold Spears, relating to the twelve years he was superintendent of schools for the San Francisco Unified School District.

- The Stevens mss. consist of papers of William Stevens, his wife Caroline Stevens, and members of their families. Included are the diaries of William Stevens when he was attending school in Ohio from 1850-1854; essays on Stevens' school and college days. From 1877 to 1910 Stevens was a professor at the Rochester Theological Seminary and there are letters from former students and colleagues.

- The Thomson mss., consist of papers of Elizabeth Anna (Williams) Thomson, her husband, Samuel Steele Thomson, professor of Latin at Wabash College and her son-in-law, Theodore Ristine. Included are commonplace books containing philosophy notes while Elizabeth was a student at Wethersfield academy. Also included in the collection are typescripts of six letters relating to Indiana schools written in 1844.

- The J.S. Williams mss. cent. are reminiscences under the title, "Skeleton's from a home-spuner's closet," of Indiana schoolteacher John Samuel Williams. They relate to his life in Harrison County, Indiana and deal with schools and social life and customs.

- The Wirt mss. consist of correspondence and papers of William Albert Wirt, educator and his wife, Mildred (Harter) Wirt, teacher. From 1907-1938, Wirt attracted public attention by his application of new educational methods. As superintendent of schools in Gary Indiana Wirt developed the so-called "Gary system" of education which kept children off the streets by increasing the length of school hours and by a "work-study-play" or "platoon" system involving the inclusion of vocational and recreational subjects in the curriculum.
