This list gives the collection name, date range and number of items in a collection followed by a very brief description of the contents of the collection. All of these collections are related to women in some way.
The following is a selected list and does not reflect all the women-related collections held by the Manuscripts Department.
AMERICAN LITERATURE MSS.- DATE RANGE: 1806-1969
- The American Literature mss. consist of individual items related to American literature which were acquired from a variety of sources. A particularly noteworthy women's item in this collection is Without My Gloves, [1940] written by Maie E. (Clements) Perley; the memoirs of a Indiana University faculty wife of the 1930s.
- DATE RANGE: 1813-1962
- ITEM COUNT: 706 items
- The Barnhart mss. are the papers of John Donald Barnhart, professor of history at Indiana University. Includes a World War I diary by Georgia Elizabeth Finley, 1873-1943, a dietitian and former Indiana University faculty member who served with the American Red Cross in France from 1917 to 1919.

- The Bartholomew mss. are papers of Jacob Bartholomew, 1818-1863, of Ohio and California. He sailed from New York for California on April 11, 1859 with his bride, Emily Ebersole, who is represented by two diaries, the first for January 1, 1859-June 6, 1861, covering her marriage, the ensuing journey to California via ship and by train across the Isthmus of Panama and her early life in Forbestown, California where the Bartholomews resided; the second is for April 21-December 24, 1866, at which time she was still living in Forbestown.

- The Bloom mss. are the letters of Anais Nin, 1903-1977, author, to Roger Bloom, prisoner. [Other Nin material may be found in the Capra Press mss. and other collections]

- The Boone mss. consist of letters and papers of Benjamin Pennebaker Douglass, 1820-1904, and his second wife, Queen Victoria (Boone) Douglass, 1837-1885. In letters to her husband Queen Douglass speaks of family matters and life in southern Indiana.

- ITEM COUNT: 1269 items
- The Bowers mss. III consist of the papers of Claude Gernade Bowers. The correspondence, dating from 1902-1972, is chiefly between members of the Bowers family, with almost five hundred letters from Sybil (McCaslin) Bowers to Claude Bowers before their marriage. Personal in nature, the letters reflect Indiana social customs. Of particular interest are the letters of the 1930's written by Bowers to his daughter Patricia, giving information about personalities and events in Spain. Diaries of Sybil Bowers from 1913-1938 (incomplete) are in Bowers mss. II and III.

- The Brophy mss. consist of the correspondence and writings of British author Brigid Brophy. The correspondence is primarily with publishers and editors and relates to Brophy's publications.

- The Champ mss. are papers of George W. Champ, Indiana physician, businessman and postmaster. Champ, his wife Elizabeth Ann (Nation) Champ (1833-?), and one of his daughters, Flora A. Champ, were active workers in the Indiana temperance movement. Contains minutes of the Woman's Christian temperance union of Dublin, Indiana, Dublin was the home of many of the leaders of the state's woman's rights movement.

- The Cookery mss. consist of items concerned with cookery which have been acquired as individual pieces. Includes recipes, remedies, distilling instructions, dye formulas, menus and household hints.

- The Daniels mss. are the papers of Edward Daniels, lawyer. The papers consist of correspondence dealing with the curriculum of Wabash College, and the admission of women to Wabash College, 1893-1920, of which Daniels was a trustee.

- The Davis mss. consist of letters and papers of Emily Davis, teacher and Quaker, of Liberty, Indiana. They are mainly letters to Davis from relatives and former schoolmates at the Liberty Seminary, several of whom were teaching school at the time in various places in Indiana, in their letters they speak of the pleasures and problems women faced as teachers in mid-19th century Indiana.

- The Derwood mss. consist of the correspondence, writings, and drawings of Gene Derwood, 1909-1954, poet and painter. The letters chiefly are to and from poetry editors about her writings.

- The Di Prima mss. are the correspondence and writings of Diane Di Prima, 1934- , poet and editor. Other Di Prima materials are in several collections, chiefly L. Jones and Capra Press.

- The Eastman, E., mss. consist primarily of the correspondence and writings of Eliena Vassilyenva (Krylenko) Eastman, 1895-1956, artist, and Max Eastman, 1883-1969, author.

- The Eigenmann mss. are the papers of Carl H. Eigenmann, ichthyologist, and of his wife, Rosa (Smith) Eigenmann, ichthyologist.
- DATE RANGE: 1790-1949

- The Ellison mss. consist of correspondence, overland diaries, and other documents concerning the Far West compiled by Robert Spurrier Ellison, 1875-1945, oil producer. Contains "Notes by the wayside enroute to Oregon: a diary of an overland journey from the Missouri river to Burlington, [Oregon]", 1852, May 6-Oct. 27 (typescript) written by Lydia A. Rudd. The collection also contains letters written from/to women traveling to and living in the West.

- The Flanagan mss. are the papers of Emma Cecelia (Rector) Flanagan, 1870-1964, a homemaker who was a close friend of the Dreiser family of Terre Haute, IN. They consist primarily of correspondence with the Dreiser and Rose families dealing with personal matters.

- The Griffith mss. are the papers of Thomas J. Griffith, 1837- , physician, and his wife, Martha E. (Hutchings) Griffith, 1842- , physician. Among the papers are a journal of Martha Griffith containing diaries, 1863-1881, obstetrical case histories, medical office accounts, 1871, and correspondence, 1866-1868; and medical lecture notes, 1865-1866; notes of Griffith on a course of lectures on diseases of the skin, 1867; clinical notes of Griffith at a Pennsylvania hospital medical clinic and an account on early Indiana by Griffith.

- The Hack mss. are the papers of Elizabeth Jane Miller, 1878-1961, born near New Ross, Indiana. In 1908 she married Oren Stephen Hack. Her four published novels were The Yoke in 1904, Saul of Tarsus in 1906, The City of Delight in 1908, and Daybreak in 1915. Additional materials for Elizabeth Jane Miller are located in the Bobbs-Merrill mss., 1906-1936.

- The Hahn mss. consist of the correspondence and writings of Emily Hahn, 1905- , author. She continues to write short fiction and articles for magazine publication, particularly The New Yorker, and has produced a remarkable number of books. Also includes correspondence urging the U.S. Government to place Emily Hahn's name on the list of American correspondents in Japan and Japanese held territories to be exchanged for Japanese journalists in the United States. The Hahn-Brandt mss. consist of the office files of Brandt & Brandt, N.Y., literary agents, concerning Emily Hahn.

- The Haldeman, Mrs. S. A., mss. consist of the personal correspondence and papers of Sarah Alice (Addams) Haldeman, 1854- 1915, banker and civic leader. The bulk of the material in the collection is family correspondence, primarily letters to Haldeman from her daughter, Anna Marcet Haldeman, while a student and as an actress; and letters, 1870-1915, to Haldeman from her sister, Jane Addams, 1860-1935, director of Hull House, Chicago, Ill. Included are papers, 1885-1913, relating to church work and the women's federation of clubs in Kansas; and some correspondence and papers, 1839-1888, of the Weber family of which Sarah (Weber) Addams, mother of Haldeman and Jane, was a member.

- The Hapgood, M.D., mss. are the correspondence and writings of Mary (Donovan) Hapgood, 1890-1973, socialist leader. [Mary Donovan Hapgood served as the recording secretary for the Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Fund and related papers are in the Hapgood-- Sacco-Vanzetti mss., 262 items.]

- The Holland mss. consist of letters and papers of physicians of three generations of the Holland family in Bloomington, Indiana. Of special interest is Margaret Ashby (Todd) Holland, 1870?-1956, who is represented in the collection by correspondence with members of her family and friends, and by diaries of her trips to the British Isles, 1914, and to Mexico in 1938.

- The Jackson, M.W., mss. are the papers of Margaret (Weymouth) Jackson, author. The collection consists of writings and correspondence with editors, educators, literary agents, and children.

- The Jones, L., mss. consist of the editorial office records of two little magazines, Yugen, 1958-1961, and "The floating bear," 1961. LeRoi Jones, 1934- , poet, and Hettie Cohen were editors of Yugen. Jones and Diane Di Prima, poet, were editors of "The floating bear".

- The Lane, Joseph mss. consist of correspondence and papers of Joseph Lane, first territorial governor of Oregon. Contains an "Account of crossing the plains by covered wagon in 1852" written by Mrs. C.A. Clarke, Oregon pioneer.

- The McClure mss. are the papers of Samuel Sidney McClure, editor. Contains papers of his wife, Harriet Sophia (Hurd) McClure (1855-1929), includes eight of her diaries and correspondence. Also includes correspondence of Ida Tarbell, author and with Marie (Belloc) Lowndes, author.

- The McCulloch mss. are the papers of Hugh McCulloch, banker and secretary of the treasury. Includes personal correspondence, household account books, and scrapbooks of his wife Susan Maria (Man) McCulloch (1818-98) and of their daughter Marie Louise. Dating from the 1870s and 1880s, the women's letters pertain to family and social matters.

- The McVitty mss. are the personal papers of Marion (Hazard) Etcheverry McVitty, 1911-1971. The papers pertain to her work as an United Nations observer and officer of the United World Federalists movement.

- The McWhirter, Mrs. F.T., mss. are the papers of Luella Frances (Smith) McWhirter, (1859-?), clubwoman. Contains correspondence, diaries from 1894 to 1941, scrapbooks, and files of The Message, the official paper of the Indiana Women's Christian Temperance Union. Her papers document efforts of Indiana women to secure temperance reform and the ballot.

- The Miner mss. are the papers of Virginia (Scott) Miner, 1901-1982, poet. The materials include correspondence, diaries (1917- 1918), poems, notebooks (21 volumes, 1932- ; and scrapbooks; these items reflect Miner's career and her influence on her pupils, several of whom became published poets.

- The Nolan mss. are the papers of Jeannette (Covert) Nolan (1897-1974), an author of children's stories, adult novels, and nonfiction works. Contains correspondence with her literary agents, publishers, authors, speeches, writings, and contracts.

- The Norvelle, D., mss. are the papers of Deborah Starr (Waters) Norvelle, 1905-1980. The collection contains correspondence, family genealogy, travel journals, and memorabilia relating primarily to travel.

- The Pearson mss. II consist of the correspondence and papers of Edmund Lester Pearson, librarian. There is much correspondence with Marie (Belloc) Lowndes, 1868-1947, writer of mystery stories based on actual crimes.

- The Phillips mss. are the papers of John S. Phillips and editor and publisher, and of Ida Minerva Tarbell, 1857-1944, an author and editor. Correspondence concerns McClure's Magazine of which Tarbell was associate editor and staff writer from 1894 to 1906; American Magazine, of which she was associate editor from 1906 to 1915 and her historical and biographical subjects.

- The Plath mss. are the correspondence, writings and memorabilia of Sylvia Plath (1932-63), poet and writer.

- The Pound, D., mss. consist of scrapbooks of clippings, ephemera, etc., compiled by Dorothy Shakespear Pound, relating chiefly to her husband, poet Ezra Loomis Pound. Also includes some diaries and daybooks. Pound mss. III consists of letters between Dorothy and Ezra from the time of their first meeting until his death.

- The Ralston, Mrs. S.M. mss., 1894-1950, are the papers of Jennie (Craven) Ralston (1862-1954), Indiana's Democratic national committeewoman from 1934 to 1953. She was the wife of Samuel Moffett Ralston, Indiana governor and U.S. senator.

- The Ricketts mss. III consist of the papers and correspondence of Coella Lindsay Ricketts, 1859-1941, calligrapher and illuminator. Includes a number of letters written by Alameda Virginia (Ricketts) Smith, Julia Marguerite (Ricketts) King and Mehitable Henrietta Hester Ann (Merriam) Ricketts.

- The Sackville mss. are letters from Lady Margaret Sackville, 1881-1963, poet to Lorna Keeling (Collard) Horstmann, poet.

- The Sackville-West, V., mss. consist of the letters of author Victoria (Vita) Mary Sackville-West,1892-1962, and her husband Sir Harold George Nicolson, author. Also present are diaries of Sackville-West and diaries of her mother, Lady Sackville (Victoria Josephine Sackville-West, 1862-1936) for the years 1888-1935.

- The Sieveking mss. are the papers of Lancelot de Giberne Sieveking, 1896-1974, author. Includes diverse notes and diaries of Isabel de Giberne Sieveking, 1857-1936, mother of Lancelot and diaries and a sketchbook of Maria (Smith) Giberne, 1822-1911, mother of Isabel. Also contains much material of other female family members.

- The Sinclair, M. C. K. mss. are the correspondence and literary writings of Mary Craig (Kimbrough) Sinclair, a novelist and wife of Upton Beall Sinclair.

- The Smith, H.W. mss. consist primarily of letters of Hannah (Whitall) Smith, 1832-1911, her two daughters Mary (Smith) Berenson, 1864-1945, and Alys Whitall Pearsall (Smith) Russell, 1867-1951, and Mary's two daughters Ray (Costelloe) Strachey, 1887-1940, and Karin (Costelloe) Stephen, 1889-1953. Hannah was involved in the temperance and suffrage movements. Alys married philosopher Bertrand Russell. Karin became one of Britain's first psychoanalysts and married Virginia Woolf's brother Adrian Stephen. Diaries, notes, scrapbooks and photographs are also included in the collection.

- The Smith-Marsters mss. are letters and papers of Hezekiah Smith, 1805-1879, Indiana Methodist circuit rider, his wife Susan Davis (Marsters) Smith, her father, Stephen Marsters, 1795-1874, Methodist church elder, and members of their families. Hezekiah Smith and Susan Davis (Marsters) Smith were the parents of Luella Frances (Smith) McWhirter, clubwoman--whose papers are also held by the Manuscripts Department of the Lilly Library.

- The Stevens mss. consist of papers of William Arnold Stevens, his wife, Caroline (Clarke) Stevens, 1834-1916, and members of their respective families. Contains much material of female family members of various generations.

- The Thomson, Mrs. E.A.W. mss. are the papers of Elizabeth Anna (Williams) Thomson, 1824-1854, housewife and poet; and of her husband, Samuel Steele Thomson. Her papers consist of three diaries for most of the years 1834-1845, a commonplace book, and poetry.

- The Tuttle mss. are the papers of Elizabeth A. Tuttle, 1823?-1896, nurse and teacher of Colebrook, Ohio, and of Ira Norris Noland, 1844?- , physician, who married Hattie Tuttle, niece of Elizabeth A. Tuttle. Tuttle volunteered as an army nurse in the Civil War, 1862-1865. Consists of correspondence of Elizabeth A. Tuttle with relatives and friends, a few are Civil War letters, 1863-1865, written to her niece.

- The Wharton mss. are the papers of Edith Newbold (Jones) Wharton, 1862-1937, novelist. Includes correspondence, diaries, unpublished poems, manuscripts. Additional materials in other collections, especially in Appleton-Century mss.

- The Wiggs mss. are the papers of George Washington Wiggs, grain dealer. Contains diary (1887-1888) written by Anna (Oldfield) Wiggs, 1859-1927, author of the novel, Apple-blossoms.
