This list gives the collection name, date range and number of items in a collection followed by a very brief description of the contents of the collection. All of these collections are related to World War I.
ALLEN MSS.- DATE RANGE: 9th-century-1972
- ITEM COUNT: ca. 150 items
- The Allen mss. consist of manuscript pieces collected by William Edward David Allen, foreign service officer, businessman, and author. Of interest is the diary of a Red Cross Sister about her field hospital experiences on the Eastern front in Warsaw and during the Great Russian retreat, Jan. 23-Oct. 24, 1915; it is written in Russian.

- The Ball mss. consist of the correspondence, family papers and items collected by George Alexander Ball, his wife, Frances Emily Ball and their daughter, Elisabeth Woodworth Ball. The Ball family, concerned about the condition of the war orphans in Europe during and after World War I, made contributions to their welfare through the Comite Franco- Americain Pour La Protection des Enfants de la Frontiere, Children of the Frontier, French Relief Fund, War Orphans Committee, and Near East Relief, Constantinople. An inventory lists the contents of the War Orphans materials, 1917-1925, throughout the collection.

- The Barnhart mss. are the papers of John Donald Barnhart, history professor at Indiana University. Of interest is a World War I diary by Georgia Finley, a dietitian, who served with the American Red Cross in France in the Vosges Mountains from December 1917 to February 1919.

- Primarily letters from Wes Lee Bouslog, 1892-1959, to his girlfriend and future wife, Opal Valentine Baker, 1901-1966, of Sulphur Springs, Indiana. The collection includes letters describing Bouslog.s service in World War I.

- The Fischer mss. consist of the correspondence and manuscripts from the files of German publisher S. Fischer. Of interest is the file of Richard Dehmel which contains letters he wrote from the front which give a fascinating account of first hand experience in the trenches. [In German]

- The Mrs. S.A. Haldeman mss. consist of personal correspondence and papers of Sarah Alice Haldeman, banker. Included is 1918 correspondence of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius which details his effort to keep out of the service in World War I. Also included is a copy of Clinton A. Sanders' "Dictionary of Slang of the Army, Navy and Marines in World Wars I and II".

- Materials relating to personal accounts of American World War I veterans collected by Frank Roderick Harper (b. 1963).

- Letters primarily of Ernest Miller Hemingway, 1899-1961, novelist and his second wife, Pauline (Pfeiffer) Hemingway to the Hemingway family at Oak Park, Illinois. Of interest are letters describing Hemingway.s time serving at the Red Cross Ambulance Corps during World War I.

- The Holland mss. consist of letters and papers of physicians of three generations of the Holland family in Bloomington, Indiana. George Frank Holland served in the medical corps of the U.S. Army, 1916-1919, and his letters pertaining to his service are included in the collection, as well as, a World War I photograph of him in the uniform of a major.

- The Louden mss. are papers of John Henry Louden and his son Theodore James Louden, both lawyers in Bloomington, Indiana. Included are 1915 and 1917 memorandum books of Theodore's and a correspondence book of the 1st Indiana Infantry Regiment, Bloomington, Indiana listing letters sent and received, Apr. 1914 - June 1915.

- The Mauck mss. are the World War I diaries and photographs of Robert Guthrie Mauck. The material consists of three diaries, three panoramic photographs (Camp Zachary Taylor in Kentucky, Fort Bliss in Texas, Camp Hancock in Georgia), one album of 190 photos with pictures of army camps and many unidentified friends, two dog tags, a motor transport pin, his corporal certificate, his official discharge paper, and a war risk insurance paper.

- The McClure mss. II are primarily personal letters between the McClure family. During World War I there are letters from Eleanor McClure who was in England, Elizabeth (McClure) Mackenzie who was associated with the Red Cross in France and Robert McClure who was a first lieutenant in the Air Service acting as an interpreter in France. Elizabeth (McClure) Mackenzie's adopted son Enrico was in the 76th Field Artillery and numerous letters relate his experiences during the war and during the long stay of his division in Europe after the war.

- The Merrill mss. consist primarily of letters from poet Stuart Fitzrandolph Merrill to his mother. Most of the letters were written during the years 1914-1915 from Versailles, and relate both the literary scene in France and the war situation.
- DATE RANGE: 2100 B.C.-1970
- The Miscellaneous mss. consist of items acquired from various sources. Of particular interest is a 1914-1916 diary of Philip Sass, soldier and businessman. Written in German, this diary gives a day to day account of a German soldier fighting Russian troops.

- The Morley mss. consist of letters from author Christopher Darlington Morley to Sir Sidney Colvin. The letters discuss Morley's activities and family, and events in the U.S. relating to America's entry into World War I.

- The Parkin mss. are letters to Thomas Parkin, British ornithologist from prominent ornithologists, artists, novelists, and others. The letters deal chiefly with ornithological matters but World War I is a topic that is also discussed.

- The L. Payne mss. are the papers of Lesley Payne, musician and niece of James Whitcomb Riley. Payne was living in Europe until World War I began, then returned to the U.S. Three of her European friends wrote to her in French and Italian of their activities as soldiers during the war, 1914- 1918.

- The Ricketts mss. III consist of the papers and correspondence of Coella Lindsay Ricketts, calligrapher and illuminator, and of the work of The Scriptorium operated by Ricketts in Chicago. There are some letters from Europe during World War I which comment on the war.

- The Ross mss. consist of correspondence of Robert Baldwin Ross, art critic, and Siegfried Lorraine Sassoon, poet. In some of their letters Graves and Sassoon discuss their feelings about World War I.

- The Rumely mss. are the papers of Edward Aloysius Rumely, physician, educator, and public relations man, and papers pertaining to his ancestors. During World War I, Rumely was editor-in-chief and publisher of the New York Evening Mail and permitted Theodore Roosevelt (a good friend of his) to use the newspaper as his mouthpiece. S.S. McClure and H.L. Mencken were also writing for the newspaper at this time and the topic of the war is reflected in the collection.

- The Sherwood mss. consist of the letters, diary, and newspaper clippings of Elmer William Sherwood, author and insurance executive. In 1917 he joined the American Expeditionary Forces and was a member of the Rainbow Division. The collection contains Sherwood's letters home to his parents and family while on the battle front, and the diary he kept during that same time period. Also included are a group of photographs relating to WWI and clippings of Sherwood's letters home that were published in local newspapers. Excerpts from his diary which appeared in newspapers as "Ten years ago today - diary of a rainbow veteran" and some clippings about events of the war are also present.

- The Sieveking mss. are the papers of Lancelot de Giberne Sieveking, author and playwright and of his ancestors. Lancelot de Giberne Sieveking and his brother, Valentine Edgar Sieveking both served in World War I and the collections holds family correspondence from this period. Also included are many photographs from the World War I period showing airplanes, North Africa and from Lance's captivity as a German prisoner-of-war.

- The Soupart mss. consist primarily of letters to Sylvia Soupart, an English teacher at Bloomington High School, 1912- 1920, from members of the armed forces in WWI. Most of the correspondents were former students of Soupart at Bloomington High.

- The Treanor mss. consist of letters and papers of Walter Emanuel Treanor, judge. Included are WWI letters from Lt. Treanor to his wife and miscellaneous military orders.
- The U.S. History mss. is a miscellaneous collection of manuscripts in American history which have been acquired from various sources. Of pertinent interest is The Official History of the Fifth Division ...1917-1919, compiled and written by 2nd Lt. Kenyon Stevenson.

- The Wharton mss. consist of the correspondence and writings of novelist Edith Newbold (Jones) Wharton. During World War I when she was living in France, Wharton became involved in various philanthropic activities and there is some material in the collection concerning these activities.

- The Wilson, J.S. mss. consist of a scrapbook of colonel James Sprigg Wilson, Chief Surgeon of the American Expeditionary force in Siberia for a year, relating to that expedition. Includes numerous photographs, some clippings and a few letters.
