European History

The largest collection in the Lilly Library concerning the history of continental Europe focuses on the French Revolution of 1789. Its approximately 7,000 pieces include long runs of newspapers and journals, pamphlets, official decrees and ordinances as well as a number of editions of the Constitutions of 1791, 1793, and 1795. Also of historical interest is the substantial collection of materials providing insights into Parisian life from the 17th through the 19th centuries, including directories, guidebooks, and city maps.

Of Czech interest is the Masaryk collection which contains approximately 4,200 manuscripts and fifty printed pieces concerning the Masaryk family, including Alice Garrigue Masaryk and her father Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, president of the Czech Republic from 1918 to 1935. There are other Czech-related materials in the Robert Bruce Lockhart papers.

The library of historian W. E. D. Allen added substantially to the Lilly Library's resources for the study of Russia, Georgia and Russo-Turkish relations. The collection is rich in travel narratives, chronicles, and works in linguistics and contains a number of books and some manuscripts in the Georgian language.

Also of Russian interest are the several thousand letters written to Russian novelist, publicist, and playwright Aleksandr Amfiteatrov (1862-1923) who, because of his dissident activities and publications, spent much of his life in exile in Italy.
