Although he is most famous for his portrayal of Professor Harold Hill in Meredith Willson's The Music Man, Robert Preston realized numerous other roles during his lifetime, both onstage and onscreen. A remarkably versatile actor, Preston appeared in romantic comedies, dramas, action films, and westerns alike. Over the course of his career, he worked opposite stars such as Bernadette Peters, Mary Martin, Julie Andrews, and Mary Tyler Moore. He received two Tony Awards and New York Drama Critics Citations for his performances in The Music Man in and I Do! I Do!, as well as an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Victor/Victoria.
