Online Tour: Elisabeth Ball Room
Slocum Room | Reading Room | Portrait Gallery | Mendel Room | Wordsworth Room
This room is named in honor of Elisabeth W. Ball of Muncie, Indiana, whose collection of historical children's books was presented to the Lilly Library in 1983 by the George and Frances Ball Foundation.
The books on the shelves represent some of Miss Ball's collecting interests: children's books, natural history, bookbindings, and literature.
Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of the Irish poet Thomas Moore hangs above the fireplace; other portraits are of John Milton and Robert Louis Stevenson. The busts represent Dante, Poe, Goethe, Shakespeare, Schiller and Burns. The paintings of Roger Bacon and William Caxton in the niches on the north wall are by Louis Meynell after sketches by Howard Pyle. The room is paneled in English Butternut.
