This room is named for Robert S. Ellison, whose portrait hangs on the south wall. After graduating from Indiana University in the class of 1900, Mr. Ellison settled in Colorado. There he became interested in the American West and collected books and manuscripts documenting the westward expansion of the United States. The books in the wall cases are a small portion of his collection, presented to Indiana University by his widow as a memorial in 1946.

The sandblasted fir paneling, the fieldstone fireplace, and the pegged furniture contribute to the Western atmosphere of the room. This was modified when, to meet the need for a seminar room in the Lilly Library, carpeting, a chalkboard, and a table and chairs were added.
