A Flowering of Affection: Victorian Valentine
Cards at the Lilly Library
Pictorial valentine
c. 1874, Marcus Ward & Co. One of a series of six cards featuring oval vignettes against floral backgrounds. This card, Cyclamen was also issued with a Christmas greeting. On front: I know your name-- do you know mine? Guess me who sends this Valentine. A bird made the rhyme, The tints from a flower, On green leaves its time, Was beat by a shower. When the bird saw you, The bird flew away, Because birds know you Are brighter than they. When the flower saw you, The flower hung his head, Because the flowers hue By yours looked dead. I know your name-- do you know mine? Guess me who sends this Valentine.
