Animals & comic scenes
Other popular themes in Victorian Christmas cards are birds and animals, often depicted in amusing ways, and comic scenes. Dogs, cats, and songbirds were regular subjects in Victorian cards, as they are today. However, the use of frogs, rats, mice, and insects in Christmas cards has declined over the years. Comic cards usually present situations involving winter scenes, Christmas customs, or politics and current events. While some still amuse us, others treated topics of a less enduring nature and now tend to baffle us.
