OneSearch @IU is a new
search tool that allows you to search multiple research databases at once and
identify recommended subject specific resources. In the first phase,
OneSearch @IU includes selected "General" and "Psychology" databases. In
subsequent releases, databases for additional subjects will be added along with
improved functionality.
In a Quick Search a single
word or phrase is entered and a specific field (keyword, author, title, subject,
description) is selected. There are five pre-selected databases that will be
searched.
Click on the box next to the name of the database to select it.
Click on an already checked box to remove that database from your search.
Multiple databases may be selected for each search. Entire categories of
databases may be selected by clicking on the box next to the category name.
Click here to read a description of the databases on the list.
You may
wish to change to search settings of the following categories:
In an Expert Search
multiple lines allow for searching more than one field at a time using Boolean
(and/or/not) searching. For example, to search for a specific author and title;
enter an author's name on one line and select "author", enter a title on the
second line and select "title".
"Group Terms" (sometimes referred to as nesting) allow you to decide in what
order the terms will be searched. Search terms contained within the parentheses
will be conducted first and the results will then be compared with the terms
outside the parentheses.
Example: (mumps or measles) and adolescents will search
for mumps or measles first. The resulting set and adolescents
will be searched.
Example: advertising and (television or TV) will search
for television or TV first. The resulting set and advertising
will be searched.
A maximum of 10 records for each database are retrieved. Total is
the total number of hits from that database. Click on "Show Search Progress" in
the left column to find the total hits from each database.
Click on "Show Search
Progress" in the second box in the left column of the results search page to
check the status of each database. You will see if a database was searched or if
the search failed. You will also see how many records were found in each
database searched.
Click on "Search Settings" (below the Search button) before you begin your
search. Find the "Results Per Source" option. Click on the radio button next to
the number you wish to include in your result list. Use caution when changing
this setting when searching several databases.
There may be a variety of reasons why no citations appear on the search
results page.
At the right
bottom of the page there is a set of arrows. Click on the arrow on the right
side of the box to get the next 10 results. Click on the arrow at the far right
to get the last page of results. Click on the arrow on the left side of the box
to get the previous 10 results. Click on the left arrow to return to the first
page of results.
"Get More Records"
will display the next set of records (i.e. records 11-20, 21-30, etc.) of each
database that was selected to be searched.. Reminder: unless you change the
default, 10 records per database are displayed.
Mark the citations you
wish to print by clicking on the box next to the title. Click on "Show Marked
Titles" in the third box in the left column of the result page. Use the
browser's print function to print the marked titles.
Mark citations using the
check box next to the titles. Click on "Email Marked Titles" located in the
third box in the left column of the search results page. Type a complete email
address, i.e. username@indiana.edu. Click on the "Send" button. Caution: you
must mark items before attempting to email.
"Show Marked
Titles" will delete all records that are not marked. The marked titles that are
displayed may be printed using the browser's print function.
You may click
on the title to get more information about the item. In many cases, the
full-text of the item may be available.
IU-Link, based on Ex Libris' SFX
software, allows you to link from article citations in selected databases to
full-text and other services that are available from the Indiana
University-Bloomington Libraries. Click on the IU-Link button to:
