Reorganization of the Western European Cataloging Section in Technical Services at IUB

The Western European Cataloging Section (WECS) has been reorganized, with the final step going into effect on Thursday, August 1.  Here is the new arrangement:

Monographic Cataloging: Text - Catalogers in this unit will primarily perform cataloging (copy, derived, original) of text-based monographs.  Staff assigned to the Text are Carol Sulanke, John Cash, Ruth Tucker, plus two vacant support staff positions.  Andrea Morrison will manage this unit.  Andrea brings a strong resume of cataloging expertise, most recently as one of our RDA trainers and revisers.  In her previous position in Government Documents, Andrea supervised technical services operations.  Andrea will retain her responsibilities for government document work.

Monographic Cataloging: Image - Each cataloger in this unit performs some cataloging with a fixed-image component: cartographic materials, posters, photographs, and artists' books.  Staff assigned to Image are Heiko Mühr, Marcia Corner, Shelly Couvrette, Colleen Talty, and Emily Tenney.  All catalogers will continue to be responsible for some text-based cataloging assignments.  Jennifer Liss will supervise the Image unit.  Jennifer has led our implementation and development of non-MARC metadata work through the Cataloging Division.  She has a scholarly interest in visual literacy and a strong background in cataloging images and text.  Jennifer will continue in her role as metadata/cataloging librarian.

The above described units replace the Monographic Original Cataloging Unit (MOCU) and Monographic Copy Cataloging Unit (MCCU) in WECS.  My thanks to James Castrataro for his interim role as co-supervisor of MCCU with me.  The new units will join the following extant units in WECS:

Media Cataloging - As you may recall, Thomas Whittaker joined the section as head of the recently formed Media Cataloging Unit in June.  Thomas came to us from the University of Maryland where he held the position of metadata librarian and audiovisual cataloger.  Unit staff are responsible for cataloging audio and visual materials.  The media catalogers are Brenda Beaman, Colleen Talty, Junko Tanaka, Pamela Cook, and one vacant position.

Serial Cataloging - Under the long standing guidance and serials expertise of James Castrataro, this unit provides cataloging of continuing resources.  Staff catalogers include Tim Larson, Rachel Wheeler, Peter Kacymarcyzk, Toni Sammy, and Julie Pophal.  The ALF Cataloging Support Specialist position is currently vacant.

Last but certainly not least, I wish to acknowledge the fine staff of catalogers who have endured this reorganization.

ALA Declaration

This week, Barbara Stipling, president of the ALA, discussed and signed the Declaration for the Right to Libraries at an event in Nashville, Tennessee.  The Declaration of the Right to Libraries is a document that is at the heart of Stipling's new presidential initiative: Libraries Change Lives.  Stipling explained that, “The Declaration will serve as an advocacy tool to help communities take action and illustrate the value of their libraries and library staff. Our hope is that library supporters will take advantage of this tool and present collected signatures to local leaders and legislators throughout the year."  Ultimately, the goal is to present these signatures to Congress during National Library Legislative Day activities on May 5 and 6, 2014.  For more information, check out the official press release.
