Libraries are interested in providing better, more comprehensive access to physical and digital collections, institutionally and collectively. Indiana University is improving its discovery tools with multiple projects in active development, using Blacklight as a primary interface for IUCAT (the online public catalog) and as an interface for a cross-collection search of digital objects from the library's digital repository. Blacklight, using Solr indexing for different types of collections, represents a potential means of enabling more seamless discovery across many data sources, including digital objects, catalog records and library website content. Courtney and Julie will discuss findings of a survey of academic and educational institutions engaged in similar Solr-based discovery/access projects and will also discuss combining large and distinct resource sets using Blacklight/Solr at IU, focusing on user experience and metadata/indexing perspectives.

Presentations will also be broadcast via Adobe Connect. Go to to view and listen to the presentation. If you are not a registered user for Connect Meeting/Breeze, select the "Enter as a Guest" option.

You can also follow and contribute to the presentation and discussion on twitter: #dlbb.

The Digital Library Brown Bag series is held most Wednesdays this fall semester. All presentations are in the Herman B Wells Library, rooms E174 or 043, from 12:00pm -1:00pm. The complete schedule, including abstracts, is available here.

What an exciting news week for the digitization world! The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library posted the first of 1.5 million pages of their manuscripts online.  The two institutions are collaborating on an immense four year project after receiving a generous $3.3 million donation from the Polonsky Foundation.  The Polonsky Foundation believes in the democratization of information, and backs the Vatican Library and Bodleian Library's efforts to digitize a portion of their ancient text collections.  The focus will be on digitizing Hebrew manuscripts, Greek manuscripts, and incunabula (15th-century printed books).  The first batch of pages includes two-volume Gutenberg Bibles from each of the libraries, an illustrated 11th century Greek bible, and a 15th-century German bible, hand-colored and illustrated by woodcuts.  For more information on the project, check out the Bodelian library website.
