Staff News

I am very pleased to announce two new appointments at the Lilly Library, effective July 15.  Erika Dowell has become the Lilly's Associate Director and Head of Public Services, and Lori Dekydtspotter has become the Lilly's Head of Technical Services.

Erika Dowell received undergraduate degrees in French and studio art from Indiana University, Bloomington.  While working as Assistant to the Branch Head in the Fine Arts Library, she earned an MLS in 2000.  Later that same year, she began work in the Public Services Department of the Lilly Library, where her duties eventually focused on the coordination of digitization and web development activities.  Erika has served as Interim Head of Technical Services and Interim Head of Public Services at the Lilly Library, and she is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Information and Library Sciences at IU, where she teaches a course on "The Book: 1450 to the Present."  Erika has also been very active in campus and national organizations.  She is the former chair of the Indiana University Bloomington Faculty Council and past-chair of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries.  In 2013, Erika received an MA in History, again from IUB.

Lori Dekydtspotter has worked at the Lilly Library since 1996, where she has served as Rare Book Cataloger, Special Collections Cataloger, Interim Head of Cataloging, and Interim Head of Technical Services.  She first trained in cataloging at Cornell University before coming to Indiana University.  She holds a BA degree with a dual emphasis in education and medieval studies.  During her MA studies at Eastern Washington University, she focused on rhetoric and composition, in addition to coursework in medieval studies.  She obtained her MLS degree, with a specialization in Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship, from Indiana University in 1999.  She is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Information and Library Science at IU, where she currently teaches two courses, "History of Libraries" and "Rare Book Cataloging."

Almost 33 years ago, Janice Lorenz began her employment in the Wells Library, when she accepted a position as Filing Reviser in Automated Processing.  On Friday, July 19 Janice will complete her service at IU and begin her retirement.  Janice has held multiple positions in Technical Services, including Terminal Operator, Online Cataloger for the Regional Campus Libraries, and most recently as Monographic Cataloger, where she divides her time between books, microforms, and media.  Janice came to the Libraries with a BA in History from Southern Illinois University and an MLS from IU. Some of the highlights of Janice's long and successful career include her cataloging of books and media for CeDIR (the Center for Disability Information and Referral) and participation in the CLAMA cataloging team.  For many years Janice provided all of the cataloging for the Media Browse collection.  Janice was also an inaugural member of the non-MARC metadata crew in Technical Services, where she excelled in TEI encoding.  Our collective thanks to Janice for her many years of productive and quality cataloging.  We wish Janice much happiness and good health!

We've been much luckier than last summer, but the summer heat has finally arrived.  Make sure you stay cool this weekend by drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous exercise during the heat of the day, and staying indoors as much as possible.  Libraries play a significant role during heat waves -- they often serve as official or unofficial cooling centers for those who don't have air conditioning in their homes.  Libraries save lives!
