Digital Library Brown Bag: November 13

Please join us this coming Wednesday, November 13 for a Digital Library Brown Bag Series presentation by David Reagan.  The presentation will be held at the Herman B Wells Library, Room 043, from 12:00pm - 1:00pm.  The presentation will also be broadcasted (see details below).

The IQ-Table & Collection Viewer: A Multi-touch Hardware and Software Solution for Browsing Collections of Media
David Reagan, Sr. Analyst/Programmer
UITS Advanced Visualization Lab

The UITS Advanced Visualization Lab, a Cyberinfrastructure and Service Center of the Pervasive Technology Institute, has created a set of functional, relatively low-cost displays to help tackle the advanced visualization challenges facing Indiana University faculty, staff, and students. All of these displays use commercial-off-the-shelf hardware and available software, and share user-centric qualities including high interactivity, a low barrier of entry, and some level of immersion. Each display can easily be built, installed, and configured in a variety of spaces. During this talk, we will discuss the IQ-Table, a 55" monitor equipped with 32-point multi-touch capabilities. We will review the existing installations on the IUB and IUPUI campuses and discuss how you can engage with the AVL to borrow or build your own IQ-Table. Finally, we will take a detailed look at the AVL's Collection Viewer software, and how to customize it to present your own content.

Presentations will also be broadcast via Adobe Connect. Go to http://breeze.iu.edu/diglib to view and listen to the presentation. If you are not a registered user for Connect Meeting/Breeze, select the "Enter as a Guest" option.

You can also follow and contribute to the presentation and discussion on twitter: #dlbb.

The Digital Library Brown Bag series is held most Wednesdays this fall semester. All presentations are in the Herman B Wells Library, Rooms E174 or 043, from 12:00pm - 1:00pm. The complete schedule, including abstracts, is available here.

To receive a reminder and an abstract for each presentation, send an email to iulist@iulist.indiana.edu with the message body: sub dl-brownbag-l Your Full Name

The Digital Library Brown Bag Series is part of the Digital Initiatives track of the Scholars' Commons Series. As research initiatives increasingly rely on technology as a significant mode for inquiry, the Digital Initiatives track will address cutting-edge and emerging topics that shape this new scholarly endeavor. This semester the inaugural Scholars' Commons Series features a full schedule of events ranging from basic introductions to core research tools, to workshops for dissertation writers, to talks by cutting edge digital scholars. November Metadata Discussion Group Meeting

The Metadata Discussion Group meets monthly to discuss metadata issues pertaining to libraries, archives, and museums.  The group has no formal membership.  Library staff, SOIC faculty and students, and those on campus interested in the topic are welcome to attend.

Structured library authority data has been around for decades as a means to disambiguate and collocate creators and contributors for indexing.  In 2011, the Society of American Archivists approved a structure standard for archival authority data called Encoded Archival Context for Corporate Bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF).  The EAC-CPF schema allows for machine processable encoding of very rich creator/contributor metadata - rich enough that entire discovery systems are being built around said authority data.

At this meeting, we'll explore one such discovery system, SNAC, the Social Networks and Archival Context Project.  Then we'll discuss Remixing Archival Metadata Project (RAMP), which ultimately embeds archival authority data into the web of data via Wikipedia.  Our very own authority data expert, Carl Horne, will be on hand to help the bibliographic-centric among us bridge the gap to current and future library practice.

DATE: Tuesday, November 19
TIME: 9:30am - 10:30am

PLACE: Herman B Wells Library, Room 043
TOPIC: Party with SNAC[ks]!  Services Powered by Authority Data
MODERATOR: Jennifer Liss with special guest PCC-NACO/BIBCO trainer, Carl Horne!

For a list of recommended resources on the topic, please see the full meeting announcement.

Learn more about the Metadata Discussion Group at our blog, or join the group email list by sending the following in the subject line of the message (leave the body of the message blank) to list@list.indiana.edu:

Battledecks 2013

The Continuing Education Committee seeks volunteers for Battledecks 2013.  A test of courage, creativity, and sheer physical stamina, Battledecks involves participants' giving a presentation on a set of PowerPoint slides they've never before seen.  Imagine the hilarity and camaraderie that comes with practicing presentation skills in such a fun and low-stakes competition.  For participants and audience members alike, it will change your life and the way you feel about PowerPoint.  The event will be scheduled during the first week of December, depending on participant availability.  Contact Christina Wray if you're game (ccwray@indiana.edu).

Peanuts

Monday, November 11 is Veteran's Day!  First known as Armistice Day (in honor of the end of WWI), President Eisenhower amended the name in 1954 in order to honor veterans from all wars, not just WWI.  Eisenhower issued the very first Veteran's Day proclamation later that year, stating, "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose."  For more information on how the country is honoring its veterans, check out the VA website.
