Rescheduled Digital Library Brown Bag: September 11

Please join us this coming Wednesday, September 11for the first Fall 2013 Digital Library Brown Bag Series presentation by William G. Omeka and Video: Using Video Plugins with Omeka
William G. Cowan, Head, Software Development
Library Technology Software Development

This project was funded by an NEH Office of Digital Humanities Startup Grant and is managed by Indiana University Libraries.  This grant funded the creation of two Video plugins for Omeka.  One allows the importing of Annotator's Workbench (a digital video segmentation and annotation tool developed as part of the Eviada Project) annotations and segmentations into Omeka as Items.  In addition, another plugin was developed to present these video segments in Omeka and Omeka exhibits.  Both plugins will be reviewed as well as a short background on Omeka.

Presentations will also be broadcast via Adobe Connect.  Go to to view and listen to the presentation.  If you are not a registered user for Connect Meeting/Breeze, select the "Enter as a Guest" option.

You can also follow and contribute to the presentation and discussion on twitter: #dlbb.

The Digital Library Brown Bag series is held most Wednesdays this fall semester.  All presentations are in the Herman B Wells Library, rooms E174 or 043, from 12:00pm-1:00pm.  The complete schedule, including abstracts, is available on: http://www.dlib/

To receive a reminder and an abstract for each presentation, send an email to with the message body: sub dl-brownbag-l Your Full Name.

The Digital Library Brown Bag Series is part of the Digital Initiatives track of the Scholars' Commons Series. As research initiatives increasingly rely on technology as a significant mode for inquiry, the Digital Initiatives track will address cutting-edge and emerging topics that shape this new scholarly endeavor. This semester the inaugural Scholars' Commons Series features a full schedule of events ranging from basic introductions to core research tools, to workshops for dissertation writers, to talks by cutting edge digital scholars. Save the Date: "Libraries, Learning, and Student Success"

"Libraries, Learning, and Student Success" with keynote speaker Glenda Ritz
September 18, 2013
4:30pm - 6:30pm
Indiana Landmarks Center

Librarians, teachers, parents, and community members are invited to "Libraries, Learning, and Student Success" on Wednesday, September 18, from 4:30pm - 6:30pm at the Indiana Landmarks Center at 1201 Central Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46202.  The event is sponsored by IUPUI's College Ready, College Bound project, and will feature a keynote address by Glenda Ritz, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. Parking is free, and light refreshments will be served.

College Ready, College Bound is a multi-year project examining the role of high school librarians and library curriculum in student learning, preparation, and transition to college.  The project began as conversations about connections, relationships, and future partnerships between high school and academic librarians.  Under the leadership of Rhonda Huisman, IUPUI's Education Librarian, and with funding from CICF (Central Indiana Community Fund), College Ready, College Bound has been able to build on these conversations and gather data about the impact of school librarians at the high school and university levels, their common challenges, and best practices.  "Libraries, Learning, and Student Success" will expand the conversation to the larger community.

For more information about the College Ready, College Bound Information Literacy Initiative, contact Rhonda Huisman at

Indiana Library Leadership Academy Group Seeks Your Input

We are team PASS It On, one of the teams from the 2013 Indiana Library Leadership Academy.  As part of the program, we have been tasked with implementing a project that benefits all libraries in the state.  Our project is to create an awareness and usage campaign for the INspire database service offered by the state library.  Before we begin designing the campaign, we need to understand how you are or are not using INspire.

Please take this brief survey (only a few minutes, we promise!) to help us better understand INspire usage (and any lack thereof) at your library.  One lucky participant will receive a $20 gift certificate to the ILF store to use at the ILF annual conference.  This prize is courtesy of the Indiana Library Federation.

Finally, we ask that you share this survey with as many of your co-workers as possible.  We would love to have input from all library types and from a large variety of workers.  We would greatly appreciate if you can complete this survey by Friday, September 20.  Should you have any questions about the survey or team PASS It On, please feel free to contact any of the team members below.

September is Library Card sign-up month!  Library Card sign-up month is an annual celebration held at the beginning of the school year to remind students, parents, guardians, and teachers that the library is a useful resource that can help lead to academic success.  This year's honorary chair is Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls.  Deng is a two-time All-Star and is well known for his humanitarian work in Africa.
