We used 6 sheets of paper to begin with, so each group contains 12 folios. The text block will be made from groups of folios called signatures, and we now want to determine how many folios we want in each signature. One thing to consider is that the thicker each signature is, the more difficult it will be to shape the spine of the text block. Here are some rough guidelines for the number of folios to use per signature, based on the thickness of the paper you are using:
* About like the leaves of a paperback book: 5-6 folios per signature
* Copy/typewriter/office paper: 4-5 "
* About like the leaves of an average hardbound book: 3-4 "
* Construction paper/grocery bag paper: 2-3 "
The paper we are using is in the next-to-heaviest (3-4) category. We will use 3 folios per signature. So our raw groups of paper, containing 12 folios, will yield 4 signatures each.
