ERIC: First Stop for a Literature Search in Education


Come learn how to use advanced searching techniques in the ERIC (EBSCO) database, including using the ERIC thesaurus and indexes, expanding and limiting a search, and reviewing and saving results. Have you ever done a Google search and been unable to find that article you need for your research paper? Has your Google search ever returned zero or very few relevant results? You can use Google to find a lot of information, but not all information is freely available on the web. The libraries have resources available to you that you can't find using Google. This workshop will introduce you to doing research with library resources such as OneSearch@IU and LexisNexis. Registration is not required.

We’ll also suggest strategies for finding digitally archived research outside of traditional library resources. Copyright Basics for Authors and Instructors


This workshop will cover all of the basics of copyright law and how it impacts you as both an author and as an instructor. From the author point of view, we’ll talk about how to protect and manage your rights. We’ll also look at some licensing agreements including creative commons licensing. From the instructor point of view, we’ll look at teaching and classroom use of copyrighted materials. We’ll look at in-class use as well as making materials available on-line outside of class. This session will introduce some of the more advanced features of the program and will include a hands-on troubleshooting session. Finding and Using Census Data -- An Introduction


Want to know how to find population and economic data for various cities or counties in the U.S.? Want to explore historical trends of the growth of cities or housing conditions? This session will review the basics of U.S. Census information -- geography, data coverage, historical access and comparability, and a quick look at 2010 data with emphasis on American Factfinder and SimplyMap. Census data for other countries will be addressed only briefly.
