Importing References into EndNote from Databases at Indiana University

    Importing references into EndNote from Databases at Indiana University - Bloomington

References may import directly or require a filter, although many, even most vendors now provide direct export of references from their databases.

Some databases will give you a choice of direct download or importing through a filter.
When importing with a filter set the Text Translation set to (Unicode) UTF-8. UTF-8 will preserve diacritics and vernacular language.
When prompted to save a file, always save it as a text file, with the (Unicode) UTF-8 setting.

Connection files are available for some databases if we subscribe to them.
Vendors allowing connection files include:
EBSCO
OCLC (WorldCat and some others)
World of Knowledge
OVID
Free databases may also have a connection file, as PubMed
* When prompted for a user id and password, ignore them and click on OK.

To search some databases off campus, you will need to establish a vpn connection. Search vpn in the Knowledge Base for instructions. Other databases will ask you to authentice with your IUB username and passphrase.

Many databases have a provision for downloading references to EndNote Web. Select the EndNote Web option if you want to put the references into your web library. Even if you have EndNote Web open, you may have to login again to permit the transfer.

*Importing through the ProQuest filter will put the author name in the proper order and turn all caps to lower case as appropriate; the parenthetical information about the newspaper will still appear; the date will be included (in the year, issue date fields)

You can edit the ProQuest filter. Go to Edit, import filters, open filter manager. Find ProQuest and open it. Under templates, newspapers article you can add ({ignore}) after .newspaper. in the Field(s) column. Save as a copy and use the copy to download from ProQuest historical newspapers.
