Importing seach results from databases into EndNote libraries

Download to disc
Many databases allow the user to download (or export) search results.
The results are saved as a text file, then imported into an EndNote library through an EndNote filter.

Direct export
The term "direct export" means the data will download directly into an EndNote library. Direct export, however, has several variations:

1. The selected items may go directly into an open EndNote library, or prompt the user to choose a library and then load into it.
2. The selected items will download, but ask for the appropriate EndNote filter before transfering the data.
3. The selected items will download into a file, and when you click on it, the data transfers to an EndNote library.
4. The selected items will download into a file, and the user must choose the appropriate EndNote filter to import the data

Some databases offer both direct export and the option of downloading the file and importing it through an EndNote filter.

A few databases are available through connection files and you can use them to do an online search through the EndNote program

The EndNote program provides a large number of connection files. In addition to connection files for library catalogs, there are connection files for various databases. While we can connect to the library catalogs we cannot use the connection files to access databases. (Rely on EndNote filters to import the saved text files of search results or select the database's direct export function, if it offers one). There are, however, a few exceptions. We can use connection files to connect to:

References from ProQuest newspapers import without the date (which is in the year field), with the reporter's name listed as first name-lastname, with parenthetical information about the newspaper title and often with article titles uppercased.

At the top of the screen you will see Go To Lists

Click on Mylists

Select the list from which you wish to download references (You may select all or choose among the references by checking them.)

Click on Citations View

Export Selected References to: EndNote (from the drop-down menu)

Click on Export

Click on Open for direct export

Click on Save to save as a RIS file to import later (the EndNote filter will be RefManager RIS)

* Sometimes the procedure will not work. Log out, then log in again, select the list you want to export and repeat the Export steps.
