EndNote FAQs at Indiana University, Bloomington

FAQ 1. Connection files
The EndNote program provides a large number of connection files. In addition to connection files for library catalogs, there are connection files for various databases. While we can connect to the library catalogs we cannot use the connection files to access databases. (Rely on EndNote filters to import the saved text files of search results or select the database's direct export function, if it offers one). There are, however, a few exceptions.
We can use connection files to connect to:
AIDSLINE (Ovid)
BioethicsLine (Ovid)
CINHAL (Ovid)
HealthStar (Ovid)
Medline (Ovid)
Medline this month (Ovid)
PubMed
Web of Science (ISI)
Web of Science AHCI (ISI)
Web of Science SCI (ISI)
Web of Science SSCI (ISI)
WorldCat (OCLC) and
Ageline (Ovid) through a locally written connection file

FAQ 2. Corporate Authors
Put a comma after the name of the organization:

Department of State,
National Bar Association,

If the name contains a comma, place a comma after the first comma in the name:

FAQ 3. Google Scholar

Only one record will import at a time.

FAQ 4. SFX
You can configure your EndNote program to use a local SFX server to look for the full text of articles in an EndNote library.
This utility may be best suited for older references that did not have a URL link to full text when first entered (or downloaded) into the EndNote library.
To configure:
Go to Edit, go to Preferences, go to Open URL
Check "Enable URL"
In the Open URL path box, type in: http://libsfx.iu.edu/sfx_iub_test In the "Arguments" box keep the default ?sid=ISI:WoS&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&isbn=ISBN&atitle= ATITLE&title=TITLE&volume=VOLUME&issue=ISSUE&date=DATE&spage=SPAGE&epage=EPAGE

FAQ 6. Lost Libraries
If you have deleted library by mistake, it is possible to recreate it if the .DATA folder is still intact. Use Notepad (or another text editor) to create a blank file and save it with the same name as the deleted library (paleo.enl, for example). Save file in the same folder as the deleted library (and .DATA folder). Open EndNote and select the new file. The library will regenerate from the .DATA folder.

FAQ 7. Problems with the Cite While You Write Tools
On some machines, when EndNote 8 and 9 are both installed, or if EndNote9 is installed after removing EndNote8, the EndNote8 CWYW add-in files may remain in a startup folder. They may cause trouble when you try to use Cite-While-You-Write with EndNote9.
You will need to remove the old EndNote8 add-ins (EN8Cwyw andEN8CWYW.WordXP) which you will find in:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
Show hidden files, if they are not showing
Go to:
My Computer --> Local Disc C: --> Documents and Settings --> Username --> Application data --> Microsoft --> Word --> STARTUP
Remove the previous version 8 files
From the EndNote folder, copy into the STARTUP folder:
EN9Cwyw (the Microsoft word template)
and
EN9CWYW.WordXP (the word add-in)
You may also have to set security to a lower level to enable macros.
