Guide to the Dictionary of Literary Biography

Published by Gale since 1978 (more than 4,000 main entries in 199 titles in the series by 10/1998), the DLB serves "not only to provide reliable information in a convenient format but also to place the figures in the larger perspective of literary history and to offer appraisals of their accomplishments by qualified scholars." -- Plan of the Series.

Each entry begins with the list of the author's works, followed by fairly detailed biographical information concentrating on the author's career. Some entries are about 2,000 to 5,000 words; some can run more than 10 pages (up to 15,000 words). They all include illustrations, photographs of the authors, their families and places where they lived, manuscripts in facsimile, or dust jackets. The entry ends with listings of letters, bibliographies, biographies and references.

Each volume in the DLB Series includes cumulative indexes to all the titles published in the series, and to all the entries in these titles.

There are two supplementary series to the DLB series: Documentary series and Yearbooks.

The Reference Department of IU Libraries owns all these titles, including supplements. They are shelved according to subject in the Reference Reading Room.

The following database provides IUCAT records of all the titles (excluding the supplements).
