Notes
|
The first general encyclopedia of any size published in North America
(1829-), the set is designed to serve as a "bridge between the worlds of
the specialist and the general reader" (editor's preface). Some 52,000
articles, contributed by in-house editorial staff and 6,500 academics
primarily from the U.S. and Canada, are written in a clear,
straightforward style with an emphasis on accuracy, impartiality, and
objectivity. While the set is international in scope and covers all major
areas of knowledge, it has traditionally centered on North American
people, places, and history. Its strong coverage of scientific and
technical topics is also well established. Drawbacks to the set include
its slow pace of revision, outdated bibliographies, lackluster
illustrations, and unattractive format.
