Notes
Only these two editions of the Encyclopaedia Britannica are kept in the Reference Reading Room of the Main Library. Many other printings and editions are owned in the Bloomington Libraries; they can be found by checking IUCAT and the union card catalog in the Main Library.

The 11th edition of the Britannica has been called one of the greatest encyclopedias ever published and one of the three greatest of the 20th century (along with the Spanish 'Espasa' and the Enciclopedia italiana de scienze, lettere ed arti -- both also in the Reference Reading Room.) This edition is also valued for the summary view of scholarship at the beginning of the 20th century which it offers. Articles of any length or complexity are signed with the initials of the author and each volume carries a key at the front giving full names and titles for the contributors to that volume. A complete list of all contributors appears in the final (index) volume.
