35 volumes, and an index as vol.36; plus four multi-volume supplements
Has been called one of the three greatest encyclopedias of the twentieth century (along with the Spanish "Espasa" and the eleventh edition of the Britannica). All articles are signed and have bibliographies including works in many languages; excellent illustrative matter of many types and very high quality. Must be used (as must all) with an awareness of the time in which it was written; the first section of a long article on "fascismo" is written and signed by Benito Mussolini. AB, 3/96 |
