A splendid work, often called the "Espasa" after its publisher: many long articles on large topics and brief, specific articles on individual facts, places, people and things accompanied by an amazing range of illustrations, drawings, maps, city plans and photographs (the quality of reproduction is often not good, however). Useful, of course, for Spanish and Latin American topics but international in scope and coverage. Has been described as one of the three greatest encyclopedias of the twentieth century (along with the eleventh edition of the Britannica and the Enciclopedia italiana de scienze...).
