Student Movements
in Africa , Asia, and the Americas
Sit-ins, walkouts, strikes, marches, and boycotts. It's 1968 and students are changing the world around them. From the Vietnam War to the grapes served in their school cafeterias, students weighed in on every issue. They demanded their rights globally and locally. The right to a world free of an unjust war. The right to a voice in their own education. The right of minorities to know their own history. The right to fair wages for migrant workers.
The strength of the united student voice changed regimes and instigated political crises. But not without cost. All across the Americas, armies were called out and soldiers fired upon the protesting students. In Mexico, the brutal Tlatelolco Massacre on the eve of the Olympics killed hundreds.
These students struggled and some were silenced, but their ideals and voices resonate until this day.
