Originally created when I trained as Latin American Studies bibliographer at Duke University, this website is now hosted by Indiana University Libraries. Completely updated and redesigned, this unique tool for research in Brazilian Studies offers several new enhancements, particularly the access to the full-text of scholarly journals and doctoral dissertations from Brazil. Other key resources include the links to library and archival collections, institutions, and the online directories of Brazilian specialists in Brazil, North America, and Western Europe. An important new feature is the pathfinder to print reference works on Brazil available in the IU Libraries collection. The core component of this resource still is the Researching Brazil Bibliographic Index. Composed of bibliographical and historiographical article citations, this searchable bibliographic database covers approximately 70 Brazilian journals in the fields of history and the social sciences. All of the entries are fully indexed in English and Portuguese. That figure is expected to increase two-fold, as more social science and literature titles are incorporated into the database. It is worth noting that the majority of these publications are not indexed or abstracted anywhere but here.

When I first launched the site, I used two Thomson-ISI pieces of software: EndNote to compile the data, and Reference Web Poster to post the bibliography online. The second product is no longer manufactured, but, fortunately, I was able to draw upon the expertise of two IU librarian colleagues to circumvent this technological hurdle. Jeffrey Graf encoded the EndNote records, making them ready for importing into the MySQL database that Jian Liu specially created for this project. I am also grateful to Katie Gibson, a SLIS alumna, who took up the site’s redesign as part of her web design seminar project.

Please contact me to suggest any relevant print or online resources that would make Researching Brazil even more useful for Brazilian Studies.
