Head-African Studies Library
Boston University seeks a dynamic and forward-looking librarian to lead its African Studies Library. The Head of the African Studies Library oversees the development and maintenance of a specialized collection of research materials on all aspects of the continent of Africa and its peoples, and administers an array of services providing access to the collection, reference/research assistance, and instruction in the use of the collection and related resources. The Head of ASL supervises a staff of librarians, paraprofessionals, and student assistants. As a member of the Administrative Librarians Council of Mugar Memorial Library, the Head of ASL participates in planning, implementation, and administration of library-wide services and initiatives. The successful candidate will be capable of representing the University at the national level with the Africana Librarians Council.
This is a joint appointment with the African Studies Center. As a member of the Executive Council of the ASC, the head of ASL is responsible for liaison with faculty, students, and research fellows of the ASC, and participates in planning and implementation of ASC activities and initiatives. The ASC is a Title VI center.
Requires an M.L.S.; B.A. or B.S. in African Studies (advanced degree preferred); knowledge of African affairs from education or experience preferred; superior web skills in discovery, access, and digitization preferred; five or more years experience in library management or supervision.
