Current Name Practice for Government Bodies in the Former Soviet Union
The old names are still valid for the period 1917-1991: Russia (through 1917), Soviet Union (1917-1991), and Russian S.F.S.R. (1917-1991) are valid corporate bodies, but Former Soviet republics is used only as a subject.

The Commonwealth of Independent States, used as a corporate body, comprises eleven of the Former Soviet republics and is not the successor to the Soviet Union.
