When determining if an authority record should be coded provisional, problems often arise deciding if a work is a translation. For example,
World Scientific of Singapore publishes many books in English written by Russian scientists. There is no indication that the work is a translation and reference sources do not help. Should the authority record be coded provisional?
Use the following criteria to determine provisional status:
- The author's country of residence. A Russian scientist who now works in an American institution would be coded full.
- Look at the bibliography for indications that the author writes in another language.
- Consider scholarly practice (in Russia, scientific works tend to be written in Russian, whereas in Denmark, they are written in English)
In case of doubt, code the record
provisional.
