Exterior Painting
When the Wylie House was restored in the 1960s, all of the exterior wood trim was painted white. In 2004, we had the exterior trim repainted and changed the color scheme to something we felt was more appropriate for a house built in the early 19th century. The photos below are from the summer of 2004.

You can see the paint peeling here, and the rust stains from the nails.
The windows and shutters had peeling paint and water damage.
The old paint was stripped from a patch of siding and one shutter so that we could test the new paint colors that we had chosen.
Here you see the stripped siding with a portion primed and the new color added. We found places on the brick that had residue of the original paint that was very close to this tan color. The shutter was primed and then half of it painted with the new green.

Sashes from five windows, waiting to be refurbished.
Here are the sashes from five windows, waiting to be taken to the shop for stripping, re-glazing, and repainting.
This photo shows the widow's walk partially painted in the new color. If you look closely at the larger image (click the thumbnail), you will see one section still in white, with the rest in the new color.
Siding on porch stripped and ready for primer. The brown spots are a special coating over the nail heads that will prevent the rust from bleeding through the paint.
We painted the ceilings of the porches blue as would have been done in the 19th century. Sitting on the porch, this color makes a nice transition to the color of the sky when you look out.
The exterior doors were painted dark green to match the shutters. Here are two doors set up on saw horses in the yard, ready for painting
In a few places, the wood was so badly deteriorated that it had to be replaced, as here on the edge of the roof.
Here's a shot of the back of the house with most of the newly painted green shutters in place.
This shot shows the completely repainted front porch.
As you can see, the new color scheme has made an enormous difference to the appearance of the house. As one recent visitor said, "You didn't realize how wrong the white trim was until you see it like this!"
Here's a before shot for comparison.
