  • Cognitive Neuroscience colloquium (David Ostry is an expert in speech motor control.)

    October 23, 2017  4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
    TBA

David J. Ostry is an engineer and neuroscientist whose research focuses on human motor control. He is a professor of Psychology at McGill University and a senior scientist at Haskins Laboratories in New Haven, Connecticut. His research focuses on understanding the biological mechanisms of voluntary movement and deals equally with speech production and human arm motion. He uses mathematical models, robots and behavioral and physiological techniques to assess motor function and the characteristics of motor learning. The overall goals of his work have been to understand the interplay of sensory and motor function and most recently, to understand how motor learning and adaptation affects sensory function in speech and limb movement.

  • The Shaman’s Apprentice

    October 23, 2017  7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Indiana University Cinema, 1213 E 7th St, Bloomington, IN 47406, USA

The Shaman’s Apprentice presents a vivid account of Mark Plotkin’s adventures
in ethnobotany in Amazonia and is known as one of the most stunning rainforest films
ever made. This film takes us “through the emerald door” into the realm of shamans and reveals the richness of the medicinal lore which is the inheritance of the tribes of the Northeast Amazon.
The future of such knowledge is uncertain, as such cultures are as endangered as the forest around them.

  • Interfaces of Sociolinguistics: Cognition and Big Data

    October 27, 2017  4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Global & International Studies Building, 1134

Abstract: For decades, sociolinguistics has explored the interactions between language and society. Intrinsically interdisciplinary, since its foundation, it has maintained relations with other fields of social science, such as anthropology, dialectology and sociology. For less than a decade, certain areas of sociolinguistics have come closer to disciplines further away from the initial epistemic framework of the domain. First, these new interdisciplinary works involve several subfields of cognitive science, such as neuroscience and cognitive psycholinguistics, that are deeply rooted in the life sciences. Second, they involve several sectors of Information and Communication Science and Technology, such as Network Science, Data Sciences and Data Modeling.
My aim is to present this type of collaboration and to situate these works within a typology of relations between disciplines, which takes into account different ways of sharing object and methods (multi / inter / transdisciplinarity), but also the balance of power between fields (coordination, fusion, subcontracting, annexation). The idea will be defended that - whatever the risks involved - these interdisciplinary connections give sociolinguistics a strategic position for integrating the linguistic, social and cognitive aspects of language at the individual and collective levels.

About the speaker: Dr. Jean-Pierre Chevrot is Professeur classe exceptionnelle of linguistics at Université Grenoble Alpes, where he also directs the Lidilem laboratory. His research program is interdisciplinary: it attempts to connect the cognitive, linguistic and social components that that affect language use, paying close attention to both individual speakers and their communities. He is particularly interested in how children acquire the sociolinguistic norms that govern language use in their communities and in exploiting large datasets made available in the internet. He has published many articles in refereed journals and edited books in diverse disciplines such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and computer science, and he has directed numerous thematic issues of refereed journals.

  • Baraka (1992) Directed by Ron Fricke

    October 29, 2017  3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Indiana University Cinema, East 7th Street, Bloomington, IN, United States

Baraka is a unique, beautiful, genre-breaking film that stimulates reflection on cultural
and spiritual diversity, as well as fragility and resilience in the natural world. It conveys the
beauty of human diversity and the dangers of environmental destruction in images and music, without language. Since its initial release, this film has been widely recognized
as an unconventional, uplifting, mind-expanding reflection on the human condition, as well as a masterpiece of cinematography.
