Sean Singer: In February 2002, Sean spent several days at Collins working with student writers and the editors of the Dancing Star. He has also agreed to submit a poem to the 2002 issue of the arts magazine. Most recently, W.S. Merwin chose Sean as the winner of the 2001 Yale Series of Younger Poets prize; his book The Golem will be published by Yale University Press in Fall 2002. Sean's poems have appeared in LIT, Slope, Cross Connect, Callaloo, Pleaiades, Painted Bride Quarterly, Harvard Review, La Petite Zine, WebDelSol, and Tin House. Sean lived in Collins from 1994-97. After receiving a BA in English from IU, he earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Washington University in St. Louis. He has won an Academy of American Poets Prize and a scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. Sean participated in the Poets4Peace readings to raise relief funds after September 11. He currently lives and teaches in the Boston area. Click here to link to the Yale University Press Younger Poets Series.

Rich Remsberg: This past spring, Rich held a street photography workshop with current residents. Rich, who lived at Collins from 1982-86 and still makes his home in Bloomington, recently published a book of photographs and reflective writings, Riders for God . The Story of a Christian Motorcycle Gang (see Publications). Participants in his workshop took photos on the streets of Nashville, Indiana, and met to discuss their work. There is a very active photography group at Collins again this year, numbering over 50, and improvements to the Annex Darkroom are being planned. Students will display their photos for the Bloomington community in Spring 2002 in their third annual Photo Show.

Tim Deatrick: Also in Spring 2001, Tim was responsible for organizing a visit to Collins by Trinidadian painter Alexander King. Alex spent an afternoon showing slides of his work and discussing his working methods and the symbolic language he employs in his paintings. He also donated to the community a reproduction of one of his paintings, Pan Woman, which now hangs in the Annex. Tim lived in Collins from 1980-82 and now makes his home in New Harmony, Indiana, where he acts as an agent for Alex's work throughout the country.

Nell Weatherwax: Performer and educator Nell, who recently moved back to Bloomington after a long sojourn in San Francisco, attended the August 2001 Orientation reception at Collins. Nell lived in Collins from 1980-83 and looks forward to working with the current students in some of her many diverse areas of expertise in the months to come.

Steve Tomashek: Steve brought his Miniature Menagerie to Collins in September for a workshop in wood carving and painting. Steve lived in Collins from 1989-91 and currently resides in Minnesota. He works as a full-time artist and sells his carvings through galleries and shows. A dozen residents worked with him on creating their own carved animals, and Steve held two open studios for the Collins community as well during his week-long residency. At the request of the Arts Council, he made a gift to the community of a hand-carved Collins gnome, who will live in the newly-refurbished Cheshire Cafe (now housed in the former Center Store). It is hoped that the workshop participants will form the nucleus of an ongoing wood carving group at Collins.
