College of Arts and Sciences
Director Carl Ipsen oversees the LLC including academics, programming, and budgets. He works with various student groups and officers and helps to coordinate visiting alumni, scholars, and artists. He works closely with the Board of Educational Programming (BOEP) to choose Collins seminars every semester as well as arrange fireside chats, professor dinners, and similar events. Ipsen grew up in Berkeley, CA. Following several years spent travelling, studying music, working in restaurants, on a cruise ship and other places, he attended his home-town university, earning a Ph.D. in history and an MA in demography. He has been at IU since 1994 where he is a professor in the Department of History and works on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italy. He has spent a number of years, pre and post Ph.D., in Italy (mostly Rome) working on several book projects. He is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome and took over as Collins director in 2010. LLC Associate Director Yara Clüver grew up in a multicultural home in Bloomington, IN speaking German and Portuguese before learning English. Having earned a Masters Degree in Fine Arts (with a focus on photography and book making) she mentors our student group, Arts Council, and teaches Q299, which prepares upper class students at Collins to teach Q199 to our incoming students (our gateway to Collins course). She also regularly offers a service-learning course called Art and Community, where IU students engage with children in elementary school in self directed art projects. Yara coordinates the Program for International Visiting artists, which brings emerging artists from across continents to live and teach at Collins. She can help with questions about programming (especially in the arts and Q projects) and is a good source of information about the campus and local arts community. Clüver exhibits her work and gives talks on art nationally and internationally.
Assistant Director Lindsay Bugher oversees Collins budgets, handles admissions, and manages the on-line alumni newsletter, the official Collins Facebook page, and the annual report. She works with multiple student groups, including the Board of Programmers, the Cheshire Café, E-Force and philanthropy. As a Collins alumna, she is dedicated to keeping Collins alumni engaged and connected to the community. Lindsay completed her BA in East Asian Languages & Cultures at IU in 2005, and her MS in Higher Education & Student Affairs in 2010. Her office is at the end of the Duty Office suite.
Student Services Assistant
Student Services Assistant (SSA) Leigh Davis staffs the public office from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays. In addition to giving tours and assisting seminar instructors, she can answer questions about the LLC, get you your free Ryder Film Series tickets (two per week per resident), help you sign up for field trips and ticket reimbursement programs (Collins often subsidizes tickets to campus and community events for residents), and check out equipment to you (such as still and video cameras). She also helps manage the official Collins Facebook Page and can help you plan and implement programming within Collins. Leigh graduated from IU with a BA in History in 2008 (after living in Collins for four years) and is began work on her Masters in Library Science fall 2012. In her down time she plays board games, salsa dances, and is learning how to play the ukulele.
Residential Programs and Services
Residence Manager Wil McCall also has an office in the Duty Office suite. Wil supervises the GS/RA staff and oversees day-to-day life in the hall, making sure everyone living at Collins enjoys a safe and pleasant environment. Mike Van Vooren
Collins’ University Division Academic Advisor, Mike Van Vooren, holds office hours in the Annex. You can make an appointment to see Mike by e-mailing him, or come over during his drop-in hours. Mike helps students who haven’t yet declared a major make decisions about their academic programs and which courses to take.
