A403/Introduction to Museum Studies
Department of Anthropology
Course Description
This course provides a general overview of the museum profession,
with particular emphasis on museums in American society. The
first half of the course explores the history and philosophy of
museums; the second half examines museum functions.
Although the class is not restricted to students seeking careers in
museums, it does serve as the first step in the training needed by
aspiring museum professionals. Students who have completed the course
will be prepared to enroll in more advanced course such as A408/Museum Practicum, or Y525/Museum Management
and to take advantage of other
opportunities for experience in museum work.
