Hindustani Raga Music: Tradition, Evolution,
and the Individual
The history and development of Hindustani Raga music, and its performers, is explored in
Hindustani Raga Music: Tradition, Evolution, and the Individual currently on exhibit at the
Mathers Museum of World Cultures.
Jon Vrska, Indiana University undergraduate student in the Ethnomusicology
Department and curator of the exhibit, selected traditional Raga musical
instruments for the exhibit, to demonstrate the role the instruments play in its tradition.
Featured instruments include the sitar, a large stringed instrument that serves as the primary
instrument used in Hindustani Classical music. The exhibit also features the tabla, a drum
grouping composed of a Dayan (a cylindrical drum carved from a solid block of wood and played by the
right hand) and the Bayan (a bowl-shaped drum made from copper, brass, or bronze).
Hindustani Raga Music: Tradition, Evolution, and the Individual will be on exhibit at the Mathers
Museum through Sunday, April 13, 2008.
