Sources for Medieval Manuscripts
SLIS
S604 Silver
Reference Sources for Medieval Manuscripts will
focus on approximately three hundred of the most important reference sources
(printed and online) related to the production, use, and subsequent history of
medieval manuscripts, including palaeographical manuals, catalogues of
institutional and private collections, and studies of illuminators and their
work. The course is intended for those who have not yet had a systematic
introduction to the reference literature of medieval manuscripts, and no prior
experience is assumed. Sources in all European languages will be
included, and particular emphasis will be given to reference works in English
(including works in translation). Grading will be based on four sets of
questions related to medieval manuscripts, and on an annotated bibliography of
selected sources related to a particular topic within the field.
