Committee for the Study of Islam (CSI)
The Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MEIS) program announces the formation of the Committee for the Study of Islam (CSI) at IU–Bloomington. The purpose of the CSI is to create a space for scholars engaged in Islamic Studies to share their research and to enliven our common academic efforts through interdisciplinary conversations and collaborations.
Islamic Studies is defined as a field of study that examines the various phenomena that have been historically produced by what Marshal Hodgson described as “Islamicate Culture.” It is thus an expansive field of study that examines the sum total of the cultural manifestations that have been produced within the Muslim world and can be approached from a wide range of academic perspectives such as history, religion, sociology, politics, literature, economics, art, anthropology, material culture, folklore, education, and communication to mention just a few.
If you are interested in participating in the Committee for the Study of Islam please contact Kevin Jaques (rjaques@indiana.edu).
Also, if you know of a panel, conference, or presentation that concerns the study of Islam at IUB, please send information to the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program at meis@indiana.edu. We will be happy to distribute it to the common list.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
R. Kevin Jaques
