Crystal Wilkinson
Crystal Wilkinson is a native of Kentucky and the author of two collections of short stories, BLACKBERRIES, BLACKBERRIES (Toby Press, 2000), named Best Debut Fiction by Today's Librarian Magazine, and WATER STREET (Toby Press, 2002), honored as a finalist for both the United Kingdom's prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction as well as the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Legacy Award for Fiction. WATER STREET was also chosen as the July 2003 Main Selection for The Utne Reader's Book Club. Wilkinson was also the recipient of the 2002 Chaffin Award for Appalachian Literature and is a member of the writing collective, The Affrilachian Poets, based in Lexington, Kentucky. Her creative writing, both fiction and poetry, has appeared widely and is included in several anthologies including GUMBO: STORIES BY BLACK WRITERS (Doubleday, 2002), HOME AND BEYOND: A HALF CENTURY OF SHORT STORIES BY KENTUCKY WRITERS (University Press of Kentucky, 2001), GIFTS FROM OUR GRANDMOTHERS (Crown/Random House, 2000), CONFRONTING APPALACHIAN STEREOTYPES: BACK TALK FROM AN AMERICAN REGION (University Press of Kentucky, 1999), and ECLIPSING A NAPPY NEW MILLENNIUM (Purdue University Press, 1998). She has worked as assistant director of the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington and as former chair of the creative writing department for the Kentucky Governor School for the Arts. Wilkinson is currently at work on two novels, OPULENCE and A GOOD RAIN. She begins full-time teaching in the Indiana University M.F.A. Program in Fall 2004. Home Page: Crystal Wilkinson |
