Interfaith Association at Indiana University |
Interfaith Remembrance Service
and Candlelight Peace Vigil
On September 11, 2002 at dusk, nearly 1000 people gathered in Dunn Meadow to remember the events of one year ago. As a gesture of community solidarity, a series of candlelight processions began at various locations throughout Bloomington and on the Indiana University campus. They converged in Dunn Meadow for the interfaith prayer service. Prayers from the Jewish and Muslim faiths were offered as well as from various Christian traditions. There was chant by Buddhist monks from the Tibetan Cultural Center, and members of the Unitarian Universalist Church choir offered their voices in song.
This huge event was truly an expression of unity within diversity because not only was it an interfaith gathering, but it united Bloomington and IU campus organizations and people of different generations, all of whom were there for the same purpose.
