The Nahuatl-Pipil Project

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the Indiana University is currently developing a multimedia CD to preserve a dialect of Nahuatl-Pipil spoken in Santo Domingo de Guzmán El Salvador. 

There are three steps to preparing the interviews for incorporation into the multimedia CD:

  1. Digitization:  transforming the analog tape interviews into digital computer files.
  2. Preparation for transcription:  dividing the long interviews into short segments.  These segments generally contain a Spanish phrase which is translated into Pipil by the native speaker.  In this phase we isolate each grammatical or vocabulary structure (and transcribe the Spanish).
  3. Transcription of the Pipil:  The "sound clips" are given to a Pipil linguist to who listens to them individually and transcribes the Pipil.
