IU Bloomington students will explore the history of the civil rights movement in the United States through an annual Civil Rights Immersion Trip sponsored by various groups on campus–including the CommUNITY Education Program, the Committee on Multicultural Understanding (COMU), Office of the Provost, and the MLK Day Celebration Planning Committee. These trips will offer approximately 50 students the opportunity to visit a culturally and historically significant site at the cost of $25. Destinations in years past have included Memphis; Birmingham; Montgomery; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; and Atlanta. IU Bloomington participants will head to a yet-to-be-named designation this year. Students will experience a variety of coordinated activities which explore the ongoing nature of the civil rights movement in contemporary society.
