Core CoursesC405 Comparative Mythology (4 cr.) A study of Greek, Hebrew, Mesopotamian, and Norse mythological texts with an emphasis on comparative and cognitive perspectives. Attention is also given to ancient and medieval theories of interpretation. F545 Analysis of Myth (3 cr.) This course surveys the main perspectives that have been brought to the study of myth in the twentieth century. These include various psychological and sociological perspectives, attempts to revive "comparative mythology," structuralist and deconstructionist approaches, and analysis of context and performance. F755 Cosmology and Worldview (3 cr.) "Cosmology" and "worldview" generally convey some sense of totality, either of physical universe or of emotional and moral engagement of existence and its meaning. We consider the variety of ways in which scholars have approached such concerns. |
