“I’ve Got the Job! Now What?” Special Guest Master Class

Bill Laughlin and Chad Brinkman to Guest Lecture for NBA-IU

The Indiana University chapter of the National Band Association is proud to announce the April master class including Indiana band directors Bill Laughlin and Chad Brinkman.

The master class will focus on “The Overall Band Program” – how to effectively organize, plan, and teach the different age and ability levels of the various bands in a public school setting. Additionally, the class will cover basic, but important aspects such as recruiting, paying the bills, signing up for Festival, etc. The class will feature commentary and lecturing from Paoli Jr-Sr High School directors Bill Laughlin and Chad Brinkman, both with experience teaching all grade levels of band.

The master class is free and open to anyone interested. Here are the details:

About the Paoli Bands

The Pride of Paoli has received a consecutive 30 Gold Ratings at the ISSMA Regional and has advanced to the State Finals 27 times from 1982 to present. The Pride has been named the ISSMA Class D State Marching Band Champion 13 times, the Class C State Champion 2 times, and the runner-up a total of six times. The Pride of Paoli is a past ISSMA Concert Band State Finalist and a BOA Grand Nationals Finalist. The Pride of Paoli has traveled nationally, with performances in the Chicago, Philadelphia, Orlando and NYC parades. International travel took the Pride on an 8 day tour of Italy in 2001. The concert bands at Paoli have earned consistent Gold Ratings in the Group I level of music (both JH and HS). 90% of the instrumental music students participate in the State Solo & Ensemble Festival.

About Bill Laughlin

Bill Laughlin is a 1983 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University. While at the University, he participated in the “Dimensions in Brass” under the direction of the late Jerry Franks (also of Grace College). Mr. Laughlin has earned the Master of Arts in Education degree from Ball State University. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Indiana Bandmasters Association, the International Trombone Association, American School Band Directors Association, Indiana Music Educators Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and, the Gamma Chapter of the International Band Fraternity – Phi Beta Mu. He has served as an adjudicator for various Indiana, Kentucky and Arizona events, has guest conducted the Indiana Honor Bands several times, and has served on the State Board of the ISSMA, IMEA and IBA organizations (past president of the Indiana Bandmasters).

Mr. Laughlin comes from Paoli, Indiana, where he is the director of the Pride of Paoli band program which has consistently earned top honors in marching band (12 state championships and 2 runner-up finishes in the last 20 years), concert band (consistent superior ratings in both junior and senior high Group I levels), and solo & ensemble participation.

The Phi Beta Mu band fraternity named Bill Laughlin “Indiana Bandmaster of the Year” in 2004. Mr. Laughlin has been the principal trombonist both in the Carmel Symphony and in the Indianapolis Symphonic Band, and is currently playing with the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble (Bloomington, IN) and the Nostalgia Band of Bedford, IN. He is married to Gayle Laughlin who is the retired assistant director of bands at Paoli. They also have two Old English Sheep dogs named “Luci & Lily”.

About Chad Brinkman

Chad Brinkman is in his fourth year as the Assistant Director of Bands at Paoli Jr/Sr High School. Mr. Brinkman assists with the Paoli Jr. High and High School Concert Bands. He also teaches at Throop Elementary School, working with the 6th grade band, and 5th grade “beginning brass” class. Mr. Brinkman assists in the direction of the Pride of Paoli, which has placed in State Finals each of his 4 years. In 2011, the Pride of Paoli placed 3rd at the ISSMA Class D State Finals.

In May of 2008, Mr. Brinkman graduated with honors from Butler University, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. Mr. Brinkman has served as an instructor for the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps since 2008. From 2004-2007, he performed as a member of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, serving as horn sergeant in 2006 and 2007.

Mr. Brinkman is a native of Avon, Indiana and a 2004 graduate of Avon High School. His professional memberships include Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, NAfME, and the Indiana Bandmasters Association.
