Community Outreach with Leaves of Brass

Jacobs School Students Volunteer at Tri North Middle School

On November 16th members of the Leaves of Brass ensemble made up of Jacobs School musicians Emily Rodeck (Trumpet) Shannon Walsh (Trumpet) Raleigh Mostov (Horn) Karen Mari (Trombone) and Isaac Brinberg (Tuba) traveled to Tri-North Middle School in Bloomington, IN.  While there, the ensemble performed a short concert and was able to coach one of the band’s brass ensembles for their Solo and Ensemble festival.

National Band Association strongly encourages you to get involved within the community.  If any music majors want to get experience working with the Tri-North middle school band students, you can contact our vice president, Isaac Brinberg.

Also, check out the Leaves of Brass Website for information or to get in contact with them.

The Leaves of Brass Quintet was formed in 2011 by musicians from California, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Virginia who somehow ended up in Indiana. From day one, members Shannon Walsh, Emily Rodeck, Raleigh Mostov, Karen Mari, and Isaac Brinberg have striven to produce quality performances of interesting music. The defining joy of these members is combining their individual musical perspectives into one homogenous group. Leaves of Brass enjoys an active performing life as part of the IU Bloomington community, and is always gearing up for their next performance.

The inspiration for the name of the quintet was taken from Walt Whitman’s collection of poetry entitled Leaves of Grass (1855), which celebrates human senses and the individual in the context of the natural world. If you’re interested in further reading, a pdf of 1855 publication can be found here.
