| Various beach surfaces being tested at Daytona. |
Seven "temporary" beach surfaces are undergoing a two month evaluation
for accessibility at Daytona Beach, Florida. The 7 surfaces being
studied include:
- Ecotrack by Bike Track, Inc.
- Safety Deck II by Mat Factory, Inc.
- Super Deck Walk Panels by Aggressive Industries, Inc.
- Diamond Rubber Mats by Big Sun Equinine Products, Inc.
- Bedford Plastic Timbers by Bedford Technology, LLC
- Paths by Paths.com
- Privacy Lattice by Life Long Lattice
Approximately 75 individuals with mobility impairments will be
testing and evaluating each surface. Data will be collected on participant's
perceptions of the effectiveness of the surface as a beach accessibility
option. In addition, installation logs have been used to record
preparation and labor to install each surface material. Weekly maintenance
logs will also record information on changes to surfaces from use,
weather and other environmental factors.
The study will continue until the end of April, 2001. For additional

UPDATE - BEACH SURFACES IMPACTED BY HIGH
TIDES
Data collection continues on the NCA-Action Disability Advocates
Temporary Beach Surface study. In addition to user preferences,
surface maintenance and other anecdotal information is being collected.
Several high tides hit the surfaces in mid-March and created major
impact on the surfaces. Some were washed out to sea and others were
buried in the sand. A full report will be available upon conclusion
of the study.
